White Sox to name Jason Benetti as Hawk Harrelson’s half-season replacement

Good news for anyone with ear drums and a brain:

Ken Harrelson will be working a reduced schedule. With a few exceptions, the 74-year-old announcer will be calling the Sox road games, saving him the 180-mile, round-trip grind of commuting to games at U.S. Cellular Field from his home in South Bend, Ind. Analyst Steve Stone will be back, working with Harrelson and Benetti.

That’s from the Trib article (registration), so I’ve linked to a blog post that quotes the story extensively.  Benetti has an interesting story:

The story is even more unlikely given the challenges Benetti has faced. The only child of Rob and Sue Benetti, Jason was born 10 weeks premature. After being diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a condition that primarily affects body movement and muscle coordination and often is caused by damage to the brain before or at birth, he went through three extensive surgeries that left him in casts from the waist down. Benetti spent part of first grade in a wheelchair and eventually had to wear braces on his legs.

MLB Network To Air Documentary On Ken ‘The Hawk’ Harrelson

In a new documentary titled Hawk: The Colorful Life of Ken Harrelson, MLB Network will dive deep into the life of the famed player-turned-broadcaster, who is celebrating his 50th year in Major League Baseball.

Airing Thursday, July 18 at 6:00 p.m. CT, the hour-long documentary, narrated by Bob Costas, will feature Hawk telling stories of what “Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams thought of each other’s playing ability; his friendship with Mickey Mantle; meeting Hall of Fame NFL coach Vince Lombardi; and being encouraged to pursue professional golf by Jack Nicklaus,” a press release on the film states.

Hawk even explains why he never became a manager.

“I turned down three manager’s jobs and that’s the reason I turned them down: because my temper is not conducive to being a good manager at all,” he said.
