Ichiro Suzuki Aiming at Age 50

Considering that this season he’ll end up with negative WAR for the first time in his career, 50 seems pretty unlikely, but someone will probably offer him a job as a fourth outfielder next year.

Marlins open to Ichiro returning to pursue milestones in 2016

The next target is 3,000 hits in MLB, which is within reach next season. Marlins manager Dan Jennings said Saturday there have been internal discussions about offering Ichiro the chance to continue chasing milestones at 42 in Miami.

“Just watching him play and his contribution night after night. Certainly achieving some of the milestones, and the way he’s respected in that clubhouse by his teammates and what he does and what he brings on the field, there is still plenty left in the tank,” Jennings said.

Keep in mind, if Ichiro gets to 3,000, he’ll have passed Rose in total hits. You bet that bugs the Hit King. Rose has made the point that if Ichiro’s hits in Japan are to be considered part of his total as a professional, Rose’s own 427 hits in the minor leagues should be factored in too.

Meanwhile, the shame is that Ichiro’s efforts aren’t contributing to a pennant race in the super-sub role that was envisioned with the Marlins.

He was signed to be the primary backup in the outfield this season. He has appeared in more games (111) than any of the three projected starters, as Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich have missed significant time due to injuries and Marcell Ozuna slumped and was sent back to the minors — Ozuna returned when Yelich went on the DL for the second time.

Ichiro has given no indication if he wants to return to the Marlins in 2016. That will depend on other opportunities, such as whether he will be courted to finish his career in Seattle with the Mariners, whose cap will one day be on his bust in Cooperstown.
