Marlins exercise option on 42-year-old Ichiro!

Outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and third baseman Martin Prado are returning to the Miami Marlins.

Suzuki, 42, reached 3,000 hits this season, becoming the 30th player in major league history to do so, and finished with 3,030 hits. He also hit .291 in 143 games.

Suzuki is 25th on the all-time hits list. He also had 1,278 hits in nine seasons of professional baseball in Japan.

Also on Wednesday, the Marlins confirmed that they’d fired hitting coach Barry Bonds, third base coach Lenny Harris and bullpen coach Reid Cornelius.

Celebrating The Singularity Of Ichiro -

But he didn’t. He has 3000 hits, which is a great accomplishment for a great player.

Ichiro clearly didn’t let a late introduction to Major League Baseball slow him. He collected at least 200 hits for 10 straight seasons—a major league record—and accumulated more hits in his 30s—2,080 of them—than any player in history. Additionally, the 10-time all-star won two AL batting titles, 10 Gold Gloves and three Silver Sluggers—which is remarkable when you realize he never hit more than 15 home runs in a season.

These facts are unassailable, but a more esoteric distinction made headlines on June 15, when Ichiro collected his 4,257th career major league hit—if you count his 25 combined seasons in the Japanese and American majors. Rose, who retired at age 45 with 4,256 major league hits, accumulated his total over 24 seasons in the National League.

What Might Have Been

Major League Baseball does not recognize Ichiro as its all-time hits leader, and it’s hard to build a convincing case that it should.

However, it is accurate to say that Ichiro has amassed more hits in the top professional leagues for which he was eligible to play than any player in history.

Ichiro Joins 3,000 hit club with triple

Ichiro Suzuki, the true “Hit King”, joined Paul Molitor as the only member of the 3,000 Hit Club to do so with a triple when he did so in the top of the seventh inning in Denver.

Miami Marlins’ Ichiro Suzuki on hitting 3,000, the ‘real’ Hit King and Lou Piniella

Was there anything that bothered you about coverage when you passed Pete Rose?
I was actually happy to see the Hit King get defensive. I kind of felt I was accepted. I heard that about five years ago Pete Rose did an interview, and he said that he wished that I could break that record. Obviously, this time around it was a different vibe. In the 16 years that I have been here, what I’ve noticed is that in America, when people feel like a person is below them, not just in numbers but in general, they will kind of talk you up. But then when you get up to the same level or maybe even higher, they get in attack mode; they are maybe not as supportive. I kind of felt that this time.

Ichiro Suzuki, still connecting

Long article on ESPN, worth a read.

Kendrick sees a kinship between Ichiro and the black players who integrated the major leagues. It’s not apples to apples. No one fought to keep Ichiro out of the majors. But Kendrick believes he faced similar hurdles.

So many people were skeptical that his skill set would transfer from Japan. People thought he wasn’t as good,” Kendrick says. “I always understood the parallels between the guys coming out of the Negro Leagues and what Ichiro had to deal with. They were always trying to erase that doubt.”
