Fangraphs: Lars Anderson Discovers Japan

I loved everything about this article. The umpires, the practice players, Manny Ramirez givin’ out nicknames.

“What is lacking in profanity between umpires and players is made up for by the music that is played during batting practice and the game. Apparently, all of the music with English lyrics is unedited.

“The other day, they played Eminem’s seminal hit, ‘My Name Is.’ This track was pre-sobriety Eminem, when his work delighted the kids while horrifying the parents. The song touches on a variety of topics that you can explore more if you’re feeling froggy, but suffice to say, it probably should be edited while played in public.

“I was standing in left field in mild shock, listening to Em introduce us to his crazy-ass self, and I had an interesting question pop up regarding his drug use and sobriety. With his sobriety came a seriousness in his tone and lyrics. To my ear, his music just isn’t as fun or interesting anymore. His new records don’t interest or excite me like his first couple of albums. So as the song played, I wondered, ‘What’s ruined more artist’s careers: drug abuse or sobriety?’  Not totally serious, but not totally joking, either.

Carlos Peguero and the Coverage of Asian Baseball – Daniel Brim – Medium

Oh boy.

Simply put, it’s incredibly rude that people stick their heads in and judge a league based on a few highlights on the internet and a few stat lines on Baseball Reference. When a foreign player does post a good stat line, it’s often held against the league instead of credited to the player getting better, or adjusting well to the Japanese style of pitching. Not every foreign player can do that. Many can’t.

Simply put, there’s not a lot of reason for anybody other than scouts to rank the quality of NPB as a whole. It’s different. In a lot of ways, I like it better than MLB. Stop telling foreign fans that their game is worse. Don’t call it inferior. It’s really shitty of you.

The internet has a long ways to go in its coverage of Asian baseball. Facts matter, and tone matters. There are so many people who can and do get it right. There’s no excuse for getting it wrong again in 2017. Do better.

Puerto Rico’s spirit is alive on the baseball fields

Those who don’t understand it never will. It’s the same reason we held a parade after the WBC for #LosNuestros, our guys, even though they didn’t win it all. Puerto Ricans take a lot of pride in wearing their flag, letting people know where they are from. Even the people living in the U.S., you are still Puerto Rican at heart. You are still Boricua.
