Giants’ Samardzija celebrates 10 years in majors with call for service-time reforms

CHICAGO - The Giants held a private celebration for pitcher Jeff Samardzija on Sunday for reaching 10 years of major-league service time, a milestone that guarantees a full big-league pension and stands as a symbol of endurance.

“I got a shark cake, a lot of butt slaps and a lot of attaboys, but when half your team already has 10 years it’s not really that special,” he joked.

Samardzija got serious, too, when asked if he appreciated the union’s role in getting those pensions and other rights, such as a player’s ability to veto any trade once he reaches 10 years, plus five with the same club.

The 34-year-old, who faces his original club at Wrigley Field on Thursday, turned the conversation toward teams using minor-league options and delays in promoting top prospects to limit service time, hold salaries down and delay free agency.

Something to keep in the files, in case there is labor unrest the next time the CBA expires….

Giants’ Jeff Samardzija has ‘evolved’ in midst of dominant stretch

Jeff Samardzija has been on a roll ever since the calendar flipped from June to July, and the Giants right-hander kept that momentum going in his second start of August.

In the Giants’ 3-1 win over the Phillies on Saturday, Samardzija matched a season high by completing eight innings. He also allowed just two hits and one earned run, didn’t walk any batters and struck out five along the way at Oracle Park.

With Samardzija at 103 pitches, Giants manager Bruce Bochy went to closer Will Smith to record the final three outs, preventing his starter from picking up his first complete game of the season.

“No, we had Smitty ready,” Bochy told reporters when asked if he thought about letting Samardzija have the ninth inning. “It was a pretty good day’s work. Eight innings, little warm out there.

Small Sample Size Playhouse at work, or a sign that the Giants Magic Pixie Dust (TM) that worked so well at the start of the decade has come back?

Reds become first team in 12 years to homer on three straight pitches

After hitting eight combined homers in their first two games against the San Francisco Giants, the Cincinnati Reds did not need much to time Sunday to make it nine homers for the series.

It took them even less time to make it No. 10 and No. 11.

Eugenio Suárez, Jesse Winker and Derek Dietrich all hit back-to-back-to-back homers for the Reds in the first inning on Sunday, pouncing on Giants starter Jeff Samardzija for an early 4-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Reds, they turned back into the Reds after the first inning….

Paddack set for debut in Padres-Giants finale

A second straight Padres starting pitcher will be making his major league debut Sunday afternoon, while the Giants counter with a veteran trying to rebuild his career after a series of shoulder injuries in 2018.

Chris Paddack, 23, who had a great spring following a triumphant 2018 minor league return from Tommy John surgery, will start for the Padres.

The Giants will counter with 34-year-old Jeff Samardzija while looking for a second straight win and a split of the season-opening, four-game series in San Diego.

Paddack, who split the 2018 season between Class-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio, has a tough act to follow when it comes to the young Padres rotation. Through the first three games of the season, sophomores Eric Lauer and Joey Lucchesi and rookie Nick Margevicius have held the Giants to one run on 10 hits, three walks and two hit batters with 15 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings.

There’s something oddly delightful about the Padres this year- they seem to be defying much of what everyone else is doing with team-building, and it may be interesting if it works….

Giants pitcher Jeff Samardzija wants ties in MLB

Giants pitcher Jeff Samardzija has an idea and he knows some people are going to find it weird.

He wants MLB games to end in ties.

“I don’t think we need to play extra-inning games,” he said, via the Mercury News. “End them in a tie, everyone gets one point like the Premier League. A win gets three points. Just end it at nine. We’re playing 162 games. Over that course of games, you should be able to tell who the best team is.”

If we’re going to be inundated with bad ideas as for rule changes, why not bad ideas from the players?
