Jeremy Guthrie Heading Home

Another Players’ Tribune autobiography.

One night, after another miserable start, a teammate of mine — a close friend who shall remain nameless — sat me down and just put it out there.

“Hey, man,” he said, looking me in the eye, “I hate to say it, but maybe it’s time for you to take it to the house. This just isn’t for you anymore.”

I didn’t really know what to say, so I just kind of looked at him.

He continued, “Maybe you should just retire and pursue something else instead of putting yourself through this any longer.”

One month later, Guthrie still coping with career-ending start

Guthrie took the mound that night at Citizens Bank Park - on his birthday, no less - having achieved his goal of returning to the majors when few thought it possible. And then ...

“For six weeks - I told my wife this - I felt unhittable,” he said. “I’d go out there in those spring games, and I just felt like I could throw the ball where I wanted to, get it to move and get people out. And then in 47 pitches in Philadelphia, I felt like I couldn’t get anybody out. And after that, I was realistic with myself enough to know that was the type of outing that could completely change what had transpired the prior six weeks.”...

“I had a conversation with Mike Rizzo during the game, in the clubhouse, where he was positive and kind,” Guthrie said. “But he didn’t sugarcoat the devastating blow that game meant to my future.”

Nine tweets show how historically awful Jeremy Guthrie’s start was Saturday

ormer Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie turned 38 on Saturday, and he was having a great day until the early evening.

Guthrie made a start for the Washington Nationals on Saturday, his first appearance in the majors since his days with the Royals in 2015. It should have been a happy day for him.

But it was a terrible outing for Guthrie, as the Phillies pounded him to the tune of 10 runs on six hits and four walks. He got just two outs. The Phillies ended up scoring 12 runs overall in the opening frame.
