Brisbee: The 10 most underrated players in baseball, part 2

Part 1 here.

What is an underrated baseball player?... It’s the Supreme Court definition of obscenity: I know it when I see it. There’s a feeling of je ne sais notice that goes along with the player, good, great or otherwise. The only thing I’m pretty sure of is that players who have won the All-Star voting in recent years aren’t eligible. That’s a clear popularity contest, and the popularity eliminates players from consideration. Sorry, Josh Donaldson.

8. Cody Allen
7. Lorenzo Cain

5. Jordan Zimmermann

Bucs Dugout: Manel: Pirates getting creative with defensive shifts

Both Rollins and Barmes were surprised to hear that BABIP on grounders was up, but they also said that ground ball data wasn’t the whole story when it comes to the utility of shifting.

Rollins shook his head, “Hmm, yeah, you’d expect the [ground ball] numbers to be down.” After taking a moment to consider how to explain what was going on, he asked, “What about line drives?” I didn’t have an answer because I hadn’t thought about what suddenly appeared obvious. “I’ve seen so many line drives right past the first baseman and that third or second baseman is sitting there in that hole, and you’re saying, ‘It’s not fair.’

“From what I see, looking at line drives may be the place to look [for the effectiveness of the shift]. I mean, we see it with Ryan [Howard], [Domonic] Brown a little bit, and balls that come off that bat, he’s like, ‘Yes!’ and the guy’s sitting there,” Rollins continued, jokingly adding, “And that should be illegal, it’s stacking the field.”

Olney: Sources: Rollins Should Lead Or Leave

Sources indicate that some in influential positions in the organization want Rollins to be a leader by investing himself more thoroughly in daily work and setting a strong example for others. If Rollins isn’t going to do that, the sentiment of some is that the team would be better off moving him as soon as possible.

Rollins, 35, will make $11 million this year, and with 434 plate appearances in 2014, an $11 million option for the 2015 season would vest.

Perhaps if the only other alternative were not Freddy Galvis I could buy this argument.

Nothing to Rollins’ benching, Sandberg claims | Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia

Who cares?

However, Sandberg’s there’s-nothing-to-see-here story became a little tough to believe when it became clear he was bothered by a recent comment that Rollins made in the Philadelphia Daily News.

On Monday, with the losses and the 0-fers piling up, Rollins said something to the effect that he wasn’t concerned about the way things were going because it was just spring training.

“Who cares?” he said.

The comment hit the paper Tuesday morning, the same day that Rollins was abruptly scratched from the lineup. (Sandberg said it was a simple lineup change with no connection to Rollins’ comment.) Rollins also sat Wednesday and Thursday. He will play Friday in Bradenton.

Phils’ Rollins, Sandberg yet to talk

Shortstop Jimmy Rollins isn’t sure why he’s been benched by the Philadelphia Phillies and says manager Ryne Sandberg still hasn’t given him an explanation.

Rollins, 35, who has played all 14 of his major league seasons with Philadelphia, was left out of the lineup for Grapefruit League games Tuesday and Wednesday and again is missing from Thursday’s lineup versus the New York Yankees.

Rollins said former manager Charlie Manuel would always talk to him when he wasn’t in the lineup, but that isn’t the case with Sandberg, who took over for Manuel last August. Rollins called it an “unusual” situation but he said he didn’t want to speculate on why he isn’t playing.

“Obviously he’s upset about something,” Rollins said in reference to Sandberg. “That doesn’t mean it’s over the course of spring training, it could have been one specific incident. But he’s upset about it. That’s something when he’s ready, he’ll let me know.”

In other old school news, bench coach Larry Bowa said Ryan Howard has cooties and called Chase Utley a heinie-head.
