Allen Craig clears waivers after being dropped from 40-man roster, stays with Red Sox at Triple-A

First baseman/outfielder Allen Craig and his contract predictably cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox. He’ll stay with the organization at Triple-A, but is no longer on the 40-man roster.

The procedural move gives the Red Sox some 40-man roster wiggle room while they try to get Craig back on track in the minors. If he convinces them he’s ready to contribute positively in the majors again they can simply re-add him to the 40-man roster and call him up.

Craig was an All-Star for the Cardinals in 2013, but he’s been a mess since then and has hit just .130 in 53 games for the Red Sox.

red sox - Missing Molina: Red Sox willing to ride out Joe Kelly’s sometimes uncomfortable evolution - WEEI | Rob Bradford

Kelly is particularly vexing. The guy clearly has talent. To this point, though, he has a terrible approach. His execution is also completely erratic. Giving him another month is an OK plan, especially considering their options. I’m not confident, however, that the team won’t be better served putting him in the bullpen.

“Nothing mechanical,” said Red Sox manager John Farrell when analyzing Kelly’s recent struggles. “He’s a good athlete that repeats his delivery and yet he yanked a number of pitches down to his glove side the other day in Toronto. It’s still about Joe Kelly understanding what makes him most efficient. That’s what we continue to stress, talk with and outline in a game plan. Ultimately it’s in those moments in making pitch selections that are based on what’s led up to that. Whether it’s too many consecutive fastballs, too many consecutive breaking balls—there’s a constant mix that needs to stay in play.”
