MLB umpire Joe West suing former All-Star Paul Lo Duca for claiming he took bribes

Major League Baseball umpire Joe West is suing Paul Lo Duca for defamation over comments the former catcher made on a podcast in May, asserting that a teammate used to bribe the umpire by letting him borrow his vintage car.

Lo Duca told a story about a game during his time with the Mets in 2006 or 2007, when after an easy ninth inning, closer Billy Wagner told Lo Duca that he would lend West his 1957 Chevrolet to get a more favorable strike zone.

Lo Duca recalled Wagner saying: “Joe loves antique cars so every time he comes into town I lend him my ’57 Chevy so he can drive it around so then he opens up the strike zone for me.”

The complaint, filed Tuesday in New York, denies that Wagner ever lent West a car and points out that no such game ever occurred.

Not the most common of lawsuits, is it?

Joe West ejects Yankees’ Boone amid clash with rookie ump

NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees manager Aaron Boone clashed Saturday with another rookie umpire, and this time, veteran crew chief Joe West stepped in.

Boone was ejected by West, umpiring at third base, for arguing balls and strikes during a 7-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

New York slugger Giancarlo Stanton struck out looking at three low strikes from rookie T.J. Zeuch for the final out of the first inning. Stanton argued briefly with plate umpire Jeremie Rehak — an injury replacement from Triple-A — before heading back to the dugout.

Boone, meanwhile, shouted profanities from the bench, and West signaled his ejection from across the field. Rehak also booted Yankees hitting coach Marcus Thames during the exchange.

So, when two men with the temperaments (to put it euphemistically) of these two brawl, does anyone actually win?

Rajai Davis accidentally slid into Joe West at home plate, and things got real awkward

Longtime umpire Joe West was behind the plate on Sunday night for the Philadelphia Phillies’ 5-2 win against the New York Mets at Citizens Bank Park, the final game of their three-game series.

Things, however, got a bit awkward in the top of the eighth inning after outfielder Rajai Davis attempted to slide into home.

After second baseman Jeff McNeil hit a grounder to first base, Davis attempted to score and tried to slide around Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto. Davis, though, was too late and ended up sliding wide right.

After Realmuto made the tag, Davis’ momentum ended up carrying him right into West’s legs — which knocked the 66-year-old over.
