Umpire Joe West Hit By Throw From Red Sox Catcher Christian Vazquez

BOSTON (CBS) — Saturday night was a mostly disappointing affair for Red Sox fans, but there was at least one moment of levity — for everybody except Joe West, that is.

The crew chief was at second base for Game 1 of the American League Championship Series at Fenway Park. Though manager Alex Cora was ejected earlier in the game for arguing with home plate umpire James Hoye, West had done his job without issue throughout the night. In fact, an out call he made on an Astros would-be base stealer was upheld via replay.

But the veteran umpire had a bit of a low moment in the eighth inning, on another stolen base. Jake Marisnick broke toward second base, Christian Vazquez popped out of his crouch, and Brock Holt covered the second base bag. All standard procedure to that point.

Given this set-up, what sort of punchlines can you come up with for this?

Tim Anderson’s eventful day at the yard ends with shot at Joe West: ‘Everybody knows he’s terrible’

Talk about an eventful night at the ol’ ballpark for Tim Anderson.

It looked like it was going to be a day worth celebrating for Anderson, whose developmental progress reached a milestone during the third inning of Saturday’s Crosstown matchup with the Cubs. He hit his 20th home run of the season, becoming the first White Sox shortstop ever to have a season with at least 20 homers and at least 20 stolen bases.

A heck of a feat, one that should stand out when White Sox fans and observers spend the offseason discussing whether or not Anderson truly is this franchise’s shortstop of the future.

Joe West, meanwhile, simply chose to sit back and plan how he would retaliate this time, the way he has so many times before….

Phillies reliever Austin Davis has cheat sheet confiscated by Joe West

Veteran umpire Joe West confiscated a card from Phillies reliever Austin Davis in the eighth inning of Philadelphia’s 7-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday night.

Davis and Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said he was using the card merely for information on the Cubs hitters. West said that was illegal under Rule 6.02(c)(7), which states that the pitcher shall not have on his person, or in his possession, any foreign substance.

You don’t see this every day…..

Minnesota Steakhouse Pranks Umpire Joe West With Braille Menu

Joe West has been an umpire for 42 years, long enough to have seen pretty much damn near everything there is to see in the sport. Six World Series, nine League Championship Series, eight League Division Series, and three All-Star Games will do that to you. Bet he’s never been owned by a restaurant, though.

In honor of his 5,164th game on Wednesday night, the second most in MLB history, West went out to dinner with two Minnesota Vikings legends at a local Minneapolis steakhouse. There, waiting for him, was a regular ol’ menu ... in braille.

Also, from the comments:

Waiter: Would you like some pepper, Mr. West?

West: Please.

Waiter: (grinds pepper)

West: Hey! You’re getting pepper all over my napkin!

Waiter: My apologies. It was my understanding you considered low and away over the plate.
