Joey Gallo becomes first player to reach 100 career homers before 100 singles

Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo hit his 100th career home run on Wednesday afternoon, a two-run home run off of Pirates starter Nick Kingham that cleared the seats in center field at PNC Park, breaking a scoreless tie.

As MLB.com’s Sarah Langs notes, Gallo is the first player in baseball history to reach 100 career home runs before 100 singles. Gallo has 93 singles. Previously, the fewest singles hit before one’s 100th career homer was 172 by Russell Branyan. So, Gallo obliterated that record like he does so many baseballs.

Gallo, Rangers rally to beat Cubs 8-6 after Darvish flops

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Yu Darvish had long since flopped in his return to Texas when former teammate Joey Gallo beat the Chicago Cubs with one swing.

Gallo hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning and the Rangers rallied for an 8-6 victory Saturday night, giving new manager Chris Woodward a dramatic first win after an opening day drubbing by the Cubs.

“Honestly, I forgot,” Gallo said when asked about his manager’s milestone. “Hopefully we can get many more for him.”

This wasn’t the kind of first Darvish had in mind facing the club that brought him over from Japan and kept him for five-plus seasons. The four-time All-Star walked seven of the first 13 batters, failing to make it out of the third inning in his first meeting with his former team.

Geez, even with my joke last week, I wasn’t expecting Yu Darvish to become Steve Dalkowski….

Texas Rangers: Joey Gallo more open to bunting vs. shifts | Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Meanwhile, back at Surprise Stadium, Joey Gallo bunted, which is probably bigger news than Lynn’s pitching or Woodward’s talking. As we all know, there isn’t much that gets some fans’ dander up more than Gallo not bunting against an infield shift.

“We’re you not here? Then it didn’t happen,” Gallo said. “Yeah, it was cool.”

Gallo has shown bunt in each of his past two games. He did it in the first inning Saturday against the San Francisco Giants’ four-outfielder shift, which left the left side of the infield bare.

“I went to bunt against the Giants, and the pitch was three feet outside and it was called a [bleeping] strike,” Gallo said. “And then I was 0-1, but I couldn’t bunt. The approach was there, and the plan was there.

“I’m just trying to do it more. If they shift, here and there, just try to late it down. Screw it. I might as well.”
