Lauber: Keeping John Farrell, Torey Lovullo benefits individuals, team | Boston Herald

The Red Sox bring back Farrell and lock up Lovullo as well.

And so, Dombrowski came up with what he called a “fallback plan.” He asked ownership to offer Lovullo a two-year contract that would pay him a salary that Dombrowski described as being in the “upper echelon” of bench coaches. In turn, Lovullo would forfeit any managerial opportunities that figured to come his way.

Dombrowski approached Lovullo during the Red Sox’ final homestand, and after thinking about it for several days, Lovullo agreed last week while the team was in New York.

Full Count » John Henry: John Farrell’s job is secure; Ben Cherington will be general manager of Red Sox for a ‘very long time’

A faith in the process.

“Why do I believe that? Because I have worked with a lot of people over the years and these are two people that are really likable, respected — they are committed,” Henry said. “They are very good at what they do. John has provided the kind of leadership that we need through a tough period and I just don’t think you can blame the manager for this. I watch these games. They’ve been painful games to watch. To me it’s not the manager’s fault the way that we’ve been playing. I just don’t see that.”
