Firing manager John Farrell won’t solve problems of the Boston Red Sox - Boston Red Sox Blog- ESPN

“I mean, I only gave up three earned runs,” Buchholz said, inconceivably, after briskly handing the ball to Farrell and storming off the mound, a bad look that Farrell said he addressed with Buchholz after the game. “It wasn’t the worst performance I’ve had all year.”

Easy to say when you have a 6.31 ERA as a starter. Farrell could say only that he’s “not ready to commit” to Buchholz making his next start, which is an indictment to the manager’s lack of options at his disposal.

As it is, Farrell must pin his hopes for winning the series on right-hander Sean O’Sullivan, who will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to start Sunday. O’Sullivan’s ERA in two previous starts for the Red Sox: 7.84.

The walls might, in fact, be closing in on Farrell, even more after Saturday night, and if Dombrowski chooses to fire the manager, it will satisfy the masses.

It just won’t solve the Red Sox’s real problems.

Full Count » John Farrell explains decisions made in Red Sox’ extra innings loss to White Sox

I don’t believe Farrell is a great manager. Having said that, his moves weren’t the problem last night.

Red Sox could replace Pablo Sandoval with Travis Shaw as soon as Opening Day

Farrell also went out of his way to say that it’s too early to call Shaw a corner utility player, meaning he’s still in the running for that job at the hot corner. A job that, to this point, was assumed to be Sandoval’s.

Now, though, it sounds like it’s Sandoval’s to lose, which is a different thing entirely.

”(Yesterday) was a good showing for [Sandoval],” Farrell said. “He swung the bat well. There is no denying his work, the amount of work he’s putting in, the intensity in which that work is being carried about. And as he’s aware, the work has to translate to performance, for any and all of us.

“He understands this about putting the best team on the field from Day 1. And games in April are equally important to every other time of the year and it’s our job to get out of the gate with the best team on the field.”

That’s Farrell outright saying that Sandoval knows that, should he not be the starting third baseman on Opening Day, it’s because the Sox are a better team at that moment with Shaw there instead.

Red Sox reporter Jessica Moran resigns amid questions about manager John Farrell

Jessica Moran, a reporter for Comcast SportsNet who covers the Red Sox, resigned from the network Friday amid questions about the nature of her relationship with the team’s manager, John Farrell.

“I have stepped away from Comcast SportsNet as I thought it was in my best personal and professional interest to do so,” Moran wrote in a text to the Globe. “They have been extremely supportive during my tenure at the network — and with this decision — and I am very appreciative of that.”

In recent days at the Red Sox spring training facility in Fort Myers, Fla., there has been speculation among local and national baseball reporters about Farrell’s relationship with Moran, who until Friday covered the team for the network. Asked about the nature of his relationship with Moran, Farrell declined to comment on Friday.

He did say that he and his wife, Sue Farrell, are getting divorced.
