Sandoval out for season; Cueto has TJ surgery

May 7:

San Francisco pitcher Johnny Cueto will be sidelined for six to eight weeks because of a strained right elbow and will not have Tommy John surgery. “It is great news,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “I was hoping for the best and hoping he would not need surgery.”

August 2:

Cueto underwent successful Tommy John surgery in Los Angeles on Thursday. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Cueto is returning to San Francisco on Friday and will meet up with the Giants when they return home on Monday.

“It sounds like all went well, so now it’s going to be 12-14 months, as far as his rehab,” Bochy said.

Johnny Cueto won’t have elbow surgery, expected to miss 6-8 weeks | ESPN

San Francisco Giants pitcher Johnny Cueto does not have a torn ligament in his injured elbow but is expected to miss at least six weeks, according to multiple reports.

Cueto met recently with renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who reportedly told the right-hander that surgery was not necessary and recommended that he rest for six to eight weeks.

Johnny Cueto to see Dr. James Andrews about elbow

Though the Giants were not prepared to share their findings from Johnny Cueto’s elbow MRI exam Wednesday, manager Bruce Bochy confirmed that Cueto is expected to see Andrews during their visit to Atlanta this weekend, which speaks to the severity of the injury.

Pitchers do not visit Dr. Andrews to discuss inflammation.

Before the Giants pummeled the Padres 9-4 to end a 7-3 homestand, Bochy said Cueto will get “two or three” opinions. Asked if the Giants had ruled out a torn ulnar-collateral ligament, the Tommy John injury, Bochy said, “I don’t think you rule out anything. That’s why you look at the MRI and get different opinions.”

Slow on this news, but it IS news.
