Pirates’ Josh Bell proving critics wrong with breakout season

It’s like vacationing in Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower, traveling to San Francisco without seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, or traveling to the Grand Canyon, without, well, looking into the canyon.

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Josh Bell, a Texas native, spent his entire past winter in Newport Beach, California ... and never went to the beach.

Snubbed the nightclubs.

Skipped the fine dining.

Oh, but he can tell you all about the batting cages, workout facilities, practice fields and health-food spots in Southern California.

“I didn’t go there on vacation,’’ Bell told USA TODAY Sports. “I went there for work.’’

Let’s check in with that scout who trashed Josh Bell

A couple months ago, as various publications were putting out their season previews, Sports Illustrated briefly captured our collective attention when it quoted an anonymous scout who seemed to really have it in for Pirates first baseman Josh Bell. The scout said, “Josh Bell can’t play. He’s not a good defender. He’s a big lump. He has bad agility, bad footwork. He can’t run. Supposedly he’s a big power threat, but he hit 12 home runs at first base. This is not a kid! This is his third year in the big leagues! I don’t think he’s got the ability to get better.”

By the way, the scout railed against Bell when asked other questions that weren’t even about the first baseman. He said Bell was the Pirates’ biggest bust candidate, called him a “5 o’clock hitter,” (meaning Bell hits well in batting practice but not in games) suggested he wouldn’t want Bell in his clubhouse, and wouldn’t want Bell at the plate in a season-definining moment. When asked which player is the Pirates’ most underrated, the scout named Adam Frazier, saying, “He hit 10 home runs in half the at-bats of Bell and is a pretty good contact hitter.”

Mind you, given that there are still roughly three-quarters of the season left to go, there is still time for changes to take place….

The Josh Bell show continues as Pirates defeat Diamondbacks, 6-2 | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“It’s incredible. Hitting’s not that easy,” said starter Joe Musgrove, who allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings. “He’s not just going up there and getting lucky, or getting cookies. You see the difference he’s made this year in his commitment and dedication, his routine throughout the day. He’s prepared better than anybody in this clubhouse and anybody in the league right now. It’s really fun to watch and I’m really glad he’s on our team.”

Bell’s 12 home runs in 167 plate appearances this year equaled the 12 he hit in 583 plate appearances last season. He has a .401 on-base percentage and a .692 slugging percentage, behind only Cody Bellinger and Christian Yelich in all of baseball, to go with his .329 average. He ranks tied for 12th in Major League Baseball in FanGraphs’ version of Wins Above Replacement.

Josh Bell hits 472-foot home run into Allegheny River

PNC Park in Pittsburgh opened 18 years ago. It sits on the banks of the Allegheny River, just a tad to the east of where it meets up with the Monongahela to form the Ohio. The river flows beyond — way beyond — the right field stands.

Several players have hit homers that have ended up in the river, but the vast majority of those bounced first. Before today, only three people had hit home runs into the river on the fly: Daryl Ward of the Astros and Garret Jones and Pedro Alvarez of the Pirates. Today Josh Bell of the Pirates became the fourth guy to do it.

For those who want their “long balls” to be really long.
