Jung Ho Kang’s suspended sentence upheld by South Korean court

A South Korean court on Thursday upheld a suspended prison sentence for Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang over a drunken driving conviction, a ruling that may complicate his plans to rejoin his team this season.

The Seoul Central District Court dismissed Kang’s appeal of a suspended eight-month prison sentence over charges of fleeing the scene after crashing a car into the guardrail while driving drunk in December, a court official said. The court official didn’t want to be named, citing office rules.

Kang had sought to lower the punishment to a fine. His lawyers have called the suspended prison term issued in March as a potential “death sentence” to his career, blaming it for visa issues that have prevented him from rejoining the Pirates. The team weeks later put Kang on the restricted list as visa issues continued to delay him.

The court in had suspended the sentence for two years following his third DUI conviction in South Korea since 2009. A suspended sentence means Kang will only face jail time if he is charged with DUI again in the next two years.

Jung Ho Kang appears in Korean court over DUI charges, vows to become ‘exemplary player’ | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Player or person? Was this a problem of translation or perspective?

“I deeply regret what I have done,” Kang told Yonhap News. “If I can get one last chance, I will become an exemplary player to earn respect from everyone.”

Kang to miss start of camp because of trial in South Korea | TribLIVE

The first full-squad workout will be Friday. Kang remains in South Korea, where his trial on drunken-driving charges is set for Feb. 22.

“It is not known how long the trial will last or when any sentencing phase that might be necessary would be scheduled,” team president Frank Coonelly said in a prepared statement. “We will continue to do whatever we can to assist (Kang) and his representatives in their efforts to resolve all necessary matters, so Jung Ho will be able to travel to the United States to prepare for and to play in the 2017 season, but his reporting date remains undetermined.”

With Kang out indefinitely, veteran David Freese could be in line for extra playing time at third base after the Grapefruit league season begins March 25.

“I’m not really focused on Jung Ho. I hope everything works out however it should,” Freese said. “I’m just going to come in here and do my thing. If my name is on the lineup card, I’ll get after it.”
