Rubin: Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez remains unsigned by SNY

Re-sign Mex! Never mind his entertainment value, someone’s needed to throw out runners attempting to score from third base on routine ground balls.

Popular SNY New York Mets analyst Keith Hernandez remains a free agent, but contract negotiations to remain with the Mets-oriented regional sports network are expected to begin shortly, now that the Christmas and New Year’s holidays have passed.

Hernandez, 62, has been a commentator on Mets telecasts on SNY for 10 seasons. He has been joined by play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen and fellow analyst Ron Darling to form one of the most beloved broadcast teams in sports.

Driving to Work With Keith Hernandez, the Real Mr. Met - The New York Times

Some good stuff with Keith Hernandez.

He gets sabermetrics, the square-of-the-hypotenuse meets Einstein’s Theory of Fastball relativity stuff. Statistical analysis has revolutionized baseball, transforming young men who might otherwise be accountants. Mr. Alderson is a devotee and sometimes duels with Mr. Hernandez.

They talked once in the general manager’s office. Mr. Alderson laid out spread sheets of Mr. Hernandez’s at-bats on his desk.

“He says, ‘Keith, we’re just looking for hitters like you,’ ” Mr. Hernandez says. “I told him: ‘Sandy, I had a good eye but I didn’t go up there looking to walk. I swung the bat.’ ”

30 for 30 Shorts: The Pittsburgh Drug Trials

Cocaine is a helluva drug.

Pittsburgh was the center of the sports world in 1979, home to the Super Bowl champion Steelers and the World Series champion Pirates. The Pirates and their rallying cry of “We Are Family” brought a renewed sense of pride to the city. But as it turned out, the family was dangerously dysfunctional, with many members succumbing to the temptation of cocaine and dragging baseball into a nationwide scandal. This film revisits that era and paints a picture of how, by 1985, easy drugs and fast nights brought the national pastime from the diamond to a federal courtroom.
