Rickey Henderson, Ken Griffey Jr. in A’s-Mariners first-pitch ceremonies

The A’s are opening up the 2019 season on the road. Not in Seattle. Not in Texas. Not in the United States. Not even in Toronto.

Once again, the A’s season starts in Japan. Oakland will play two exhibition games against professional Japanese teams before their first regular-season game is scheduled for March 20, a week before the rest of the league, against the Mariners in Tokyo.

And when the games begin, two greats will be in the batter’s box. A’s Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson will step in during the ceremonial first pitch before Game 1, followed by Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr. in the next game.

Rickey has to prepare- there’s a greater-than-zero chance he’ll play for the Marlins by the end of the season.

Mariano Rivera could be the first unanimous Hall of Famer in baseball history

There are 226 former Major League Baseball players in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and they all have one thing in common: Not a single one has arrived to Cooperstown as a unanimous selection.

Not Babe Ruth. Not Hank Aaron. Not Willie Mays. Not even Ted Williams or Stan Musial or Roberto Clemente. Despite their incredible production and the undeniable impact each of those iconic players had on baseball, none of them earned the full support of the Hall of Fame voters. In fact, none of the aforementioned legends are among the six players to top 98 percent when elected.

It’s a remarkable truth that speaks to how fickle, how dramatic, how disillusioned and, in some instances, how power hungry Hall of Fame voters can be. Now though, as the announcement of the 2019 class nears, it’s a remarkable truth that is facing its stiffest challenge. Mariano Rivera, the all-time saves leader in MLB history, is inching closer to rewriting this startling piece of history.

A consideration of Hall of Fame voting, with at least one detail of interest I hadn’t heard before.

WATCH: Jim Duquette says Mets almost landed Ken Griffey Jr. via trade

The Mets came close to landing Ken Griffey Jr. in a blockbuster trade back in 2000, but the haul of players that would have been sent in Griffey’s place could have altered how well the Mets would have fared during their incredible 2000 season.

According to former Mets Assistant GM Jim Duquette, they offered a package of Armando Benitez, Octavio Dotel and Roger Cedeno, but Grifffey’s no trade clause was in the way and at that time he stated he only wanted to go to Cincinatti.

“There was an outside chance we could get him if we offered this package…it got to the point where Pat Gillick the [Mariners] GM at the time, went and asked Griffey, cause he was in the last year of his deal and they didn’t think he could sign him long term. But he didn’t give him any time, here’s a guy who grew up as a Mariner…if I had been given more time I might have accepted the deal,” said Duquette.

Strange- I was under the impression that Steve Phillips never saw a bad idea he didn’t like….
