Jack Flaherty, Juan Soto and more fresh faces to watch during the 2019 MLB playoffs

A new baseball postseason brings with it a chance for new players to have their star moment.

Around Major League Baseball right now, there are quite a few young players who have had stellar seasons and are now ready to approach the biggest month of the season — when the lighters are brighter, the headlines are bigger and the whole nation is watching.

Sure, we’ll see the likes of Clayton Kershaw, Alex Bregman, Max Scherzer and Aaron Judge playing October baseball. But we’ll also see stars-in-the-making like Jack Flaherty, Juan Soto, Yordan Alvarez and Gavin Lux.

Our crew of MLB writers picked one such fresh face from each postseason team, names you should know about as you prepare for baseball’s exciting final month.

Note to self: Check back in when the playoffs are over, to see how well they performed during it.

LEADING OFF: Cole follows Verlander’s gem, Darvish scratched

TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW

One day after Houston teammate Justin Verlander pitched a no-hitter, Gerrit Cole looks to stay on a roll of his own when the Astros visit Milwaukee on Labor Day. Cole (15-5, 2.85 ERA) is 11-0 with a 2.06 ERA in his last 16 starts and needs six strikeouts to regain the major league lead from Verlander, who whiffed 14 batters Sunday during his third career no-hitter — second in Toronto.

With four weeks to go, Verlander and Cole appear to be running 1-2 in the AL Cy Young Award race.

At least it isn’t an animal act that he has to follow.

Brewers option Keston Hiura to open spot for Travis Shaw

This was a surprise.

Preserving depth on a major-league baseball team sometimes means having to make tough decisions, and the Milwaukee Brewers made one Monday afternoon.

Rather than lose a player they value, the Brewers optioned second baseman Keston Hiura to Class AAA San Antonio to open a roster spot for the return of third baseman Travis Shaw from minor-league rehabilitation assignment with that club.

In making that announcement, Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns made it clear that it wasn’t anything Hiura failed to do in proving he can perform at the big-league level. Rather, it was a move made entirely because of roster considerations.
