Kyle Schwarber rediscovering his form in Iowa: ‘This is a positive time’ - Chicago Tribune

“There is no feeling sorry,” he said. “Trust me. I did it to myself. I’m the one who was out there playing every day. This is a positive time.

“Talking to my parents, they were very supportive, and my girlfriend is here with me, and it’s all supportive. It’s just the extra reinforcement you get.”

Kyle Schwarber headed back to Triple-A Iowa

A spokesperson for the Chicago Cubs confirmed Thursday that Schwarber is being sent back to Triple-A Iowa after struggling through the first months of the 2017 season.

The 24-year-old outfielder/catcher was expected to play a major role for the defending world champions again this season but has hit just .171 (38-for-222) in 64 games.

Schwarber has been a fan favorite ever since the Cubs selected him in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft. That popularity skyrocketed when Schwarber shocked the baseball world by returning from a major knee and ankle injury he suffered early in the season and was added to Chicago’s World Series roster.

The left-handed batter was a key contributor to the Cubs’ first World Series title since 1908 when he compiled a .412 batting average.

Wrigleyville - SCHWARBER AND THE SHIFT

Does anyone who has been watching him everyday think he’s been selling out too much to go yard? It seems like he’s not staying on the ball as long as he used to stay on the ball. Thoughts?

There are lots of things Schwarber still does well. The power is still present, as demonstrated by his grand slam yesterday, and he has the discipline to take walks even when he’s struggling this badly. His luck won’t stay as bad as it did in May either, even if we might expect shifts to take more hits away from him than the average player. The fact remains that there’s a clear blueprint for how to successfully turn Schwarber into a relatively ineffective hitter, and the sooner he can shake that off, the better.

Kyle Schwarber Is Not Bad at Baseball | FanGraphs Baseball

Monstrous production of 2015?

Schwarber’s has recorded a .343 xwOBA for the season. That’s a good bit above average and would produce about a 110 or 115 wRC+ after park adjustment. It remains to be seen whether Schwarber returns to the monstrous production of 2015. He’s going to walk a ton, though, which should keep his on-base percentage afloat. He might always strike out a lot, too, which will limit his upside some. Even if he hits the rest of the season just like he has so far, that’s going to make him a roughly average baseball player, assuming he runs into less bad luck. If the wind blows out a little bit more this summer at Wrigley, we might see something closer to the 2015 version of Kyle Schwarber. The stat line screams slump and the eye test might deceive due to a game that involves a lot of strikeouts, but Schwarber hasn’t been as bad as he’s shown. There’s little reason not to expect substantially better results going forward.

Astronomical – Joe Blogs – Medium

The Poz on the Astros, Kyle Schwarber, and Mr. Met.

A few years ago, when Theo Epstein was first talking about how to make the Cubs winners, he kept going back to a singular philosophy: You need to control the strike zone both on offense and on defense. He thought of the strike zone the way football coaches think about the line of scrimmage.

Kyle Schwarber seeks better results at leadoff | MLB.com

I know this is pointing out the obvious but…if he’s a click underneath the baseball, it’s not a good swing.

“Mentally, it gets frustrating,” Schwarber said. “You feel you put a good swing on the ball and you’re not getting a good result. I just have to keep going with the approach, stay positive every day. I’m never going up there thinking I’m going to get an out. I’m going to stay with my mind-set and keep approaching what I’m doing.”
“I’ve seen great swings,” Maddon said. “He’s just a click underneath the baseball.”

Inside the scouting report where Cubs compared Kyle Schwarber to Babe Ruth and called their shot | CSN Chicago

Stan Zielinski and Kyle Schwarber will be forever intertwined.

Amateur scouting director Matt Dorey found himself re-reading old reports after Zielinski’s death: “‘He has an arm action like a cranky shopping-cart wheel,’ things like that where you would just automatically envision the guy with a roll or a rattle at the back of his arm stroke.”

Hendry started cackling over the phone: “‘A one-pitch carnival thrower.’ You know, like guys on dates with their girlfriend trying to win the stuffed animal.

“Or he’d call ‘em a ‘seat-belt reliever.’ You had to f———buckle up every time he came into the game and hold on. Oh, he had s—- like that all the time.

“He had a language of his own. Man, I’m telling you, he had s—- that nobody’s ever written in a scouting report before — or ever will again.”

Like comparing a guy at a basketball school — who might have entered his junior season as a possible second-round pick — to one of the most iconic athletes of all-time.

“He just took you to this place where you were mesmerized reading it,” McLeod said.

“It felt like I was watching a game through an old, bad whatever-millimeter camera,” Dorey said. “I felt like I was watching Babe Ruth saunter to the plate, call his shot and then he went on to hit a home run. And then as he trotted around the bases, I felt like I was watching Babe Ruth’s trot.”

Pump The Brakes On Kyle Schwarber? Well, Actually…

This week, Bradford Doolittle of ESPN asked fans to pump the brakes on Schwarber, citing a few reasons why there should be concern surrounding the hulking catcher that the Cubs have moved defensively from behind the plate to out in left field. The last time Cubs fans were told to “pump the brakes” on a player was late June of 2016 with Kris Bryant, and well, we all remember how that turned out. But tempering expectations on Schwarber might be a good thing.

Why Joe Maddon sees Kyle Schwarber as the leadoff guy in Cubs lineup | CSN Chicago

The Geek Department still needs to send more information to Maddon, but the Cubs are toying with the idea of again hitting the pitcher eighth, in front of the Jay/Albert Almora Jr. platoon.
