Kyler Murray chooses to pursue NFL, ‘fully committing’ to becoming QB

The former Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner announced Monday he was “firmly and fully committing my life and time to becoming an NFL quarterback.”

Murray was also the No. 9 pick by the Oakland Athletics in the 2018 MLB draft and was due to report to spring training on Friday. But now his focus will turn to the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, which begins Feb. 26.

“Football has been my love and passion my entire life,” Murray wrote in a picture posted to Twitter. “I was raised to play QB, and I very much look forward to dedicating 100% of myself to being the best QB possible and winning NFL championships. I have started an extensive training program to further prepare myself for upcoming NFL workouts and interviews. I eagerly await the opportunity to continue to prove to NFL decision makers that I am the franchise QB in this draft.”

Kyler Murray remains awkwardly silent on the football/baseball question

ATLANTA — It took five days and innumerable interviews across hundreds of media outlets, but Super Bowl LIII finally has its first legitimately weird moment.

Appearing on the Dan Patrick Show, Heisman Trophy winner, former Oklahoma quarterback, current Oakland A’s minor-leaguer, and possible future NFL draft pick Kyler Murray got the only question anyone would possibly want to know about him right now — football or baseball? — and fumbled it or let it go right between his legs, choose your metaphor. Patrick tried to get Murray to at least concede he’d be going to the NFL Combine or holding a pro day to allow scouts to assess his skills, and, well … no luck.

Mind you, no one else seems to want to be decisive this hot-stove season….

Deion Sanders advises Kyler Murray to choose baseball

After declaring for the NFL draft on Monday, Kyler Murray must choose between football and baseball. One man who’s been in Murray’s position before, two-sport legend Deion Sanders, knows which decision he’d make if he was in the Heisman Trophy winner’s shoes.

Sanders suggested that Murray, an Oakland Athletics draft pick who’s already agreed to a signing bonus with the team, forego life in the NFL and stick to baseball.

“If I was in his shoes, I’m picking up the baseball bat and I’m not looking back,” Sanders said on ESPN’s SportsCenter.

So, any chance he’ll be listened to?

Inside Kyler Murray’s football-vs.-baseball decision

Dan O’Dowd had a great idea last night on MLB Tonight. With the changes in the CBA it’s a lot more difficult for baseball to compete with football because of the limits on bonuses. He suggested a change in the CBA whereby a team can match an NFL bonus, so baseball can better compete with the NFL.

Kyler Murray: Is The NFL A More Lucrative Option Than MLB for Oklahoma QB?

It’s not as cut and dried as you might think.

To offer one more comparison, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and Dodgers lefthander Clayton Kershaw grew up together. Kershaw has been one of the best players in baseball over the past decade. Generously, Stafford could be described as a slightly above-average NFL quarterback. He’s made one Pro Bowl. In 10 seasons, Stafford has earned $178 million. If he plays the final four years of his current contract, he’ll have earned over $262 million. Kershaw has earned $173 million so far over 11 seasons. He will earn $266 million by the end of his current deal in 2021.

Both players are 30 years old, but because he’s a quarterback, there’s a good chance Stafford’s career will last longer than Kershaw’s. In 2018, seven of the NFL’s 32 starting quarterbacks are 35 or older. Four are 37 or older. Of the 196 pitchers and hitters who qualified for the ERA or batting title last season, 11 were 35 or older. Only three were 37 or older.

Murray will have a big decision to make going forward. But MLB’s decision to put a hard limit on draft bonuses and prohibit major league contracts for two-sport stars as draftees makes it hard for baseball to compete financially when it comes to quarterbacks.

Kyler Murray still plans to give up football for baseball after Oklahoma season

NORMAN, Okla.—Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray said Monday that even though he thinks he could play in the NFL, he’s still preparing to move on with his baseball career and give up football after this season.

“As of now, that’s the plan,” Murray said.

This summer, Murray was the ninth overall pick of the Oakland Athletics in the MLB Draft. He agreed to a deal with the A’s that included a $4.66 million signing bonus.

So, how do we interpret this decision?
