Toledo News-Bee, June 3, 1915:

LARRY DOYLE PULLED A NEW STYLE BONER

Larry Doyle, Giant leader, has always been recognized as one of the National league’s smartest players. At Boston on Wednesday he pulled a stunt for which Brave fans think he should be consigned to the boneyard. The play cost the Giants the game.

With Burns on third, Doyle flied to Moran in right. He trotted down to first. After the catch Burns started in from third and would have scored easily. Moran whipped the ball in, but Doyle stopped it at first, saying the throw was too late to catch the man at the plate. The umpire called the runner out for Doyle’s interference. The game ended 5 to 5 in the 10th.

Thankfully, unlike the famous Merkle and Snodgrass plays, this one didn’t help to decide a championship. The 1915 Giants finished in last place.
