MLB umpire Dale Scott comes out as gay in quietest way possible

umpire dale scott:

“My thought process was,” Scott told Outsports in his first interview on the subject, “is that there’s a story about my career and how I got started in umpiring and they’re talking to people I have known since junior high and it didn’t seem right to have a whole story and pictures without a picture of Mike and I, someone who’s been with me through this entire process. We met the October after my first year in the big leagues.
...
“I realized that it could open a Pandora’s Box, but this is not a surprise to Major League Baseball, the people I work for. It’s not a surprise to the umpire staff. Until Mike and I got married last November, he was my same-sex domestic partner and had his own MLB I.D. and was on my insurance policy.
...
“I figured it all out when I was 19. My coming out process was very simple. One day I just said to myself: ‘I get it, you’re gay. Now it all makes sense.’ I realized this is who I was and what I was. I decided I can do one of two things—I can lie to myself and be miserable the rest of my life or I can accept who I am, understanding that I’ve got to play the game. This is 1979. I might have to have a ‘beard’ or not talk about personal things. I understood that there was a game that had to be played in the game of life as a gay man in 1979, but I also understood who I was and what I was and it wasn’t like some long-drawn out process.

“I wasn’t going to look at myself every day for the rest of my life and lie. That to me would be a miserable existence.”

The Inventor of the High Five

Glenn Burke was credited with inventing the high five in 1977, early in his MLB career. Unfortunately, he was outed as a gay man that offseason, and his career and his life were both shortened.

MLB names Billy Bean its first ambassador for inclusion

Billy Bean should not have written that book.

One year after Major League Baseball issued a policy prohibiting players from harassing and discriminating against others players based on their sexual orientation, Commissioner Bud Selig appointed former outfielder Billy Bean to be MLB’s first ambassador for inclusion.

The announcement was made on Tuesday at the T-Mobile All-Star FanFest, following Selig’s annual Town Hall Chat on the set of the MLB.com stage at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Selig and Bean were accompanied by Lutha Burke, the sister of the late former Major League outfielder Glenn Burke.

In his new role, Bean, who made public his homosexuality in 1999, will provide guidance and training related to efforts to support those in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community throughout Major League Baseball. He will work with Major and Minor League clubs to encourage equal opportunity in accordance with the joint MLB-MLBPA Workplace Code of Conduct.

Bean also will develop educational training initiatives against sexism, homophobia and prejudice and will be present at annual industry events, including the Winter Meetings and the MLB-MLBPA Rookie Career Development Program.
