MLB’s 50 most fascinating begin with this year’s Theo Epstein | New York Post

Jimmy thinks Hardball is a weird way for Sherman to talk about himself in the third person.

That is why it was so easy to name Epstein Hardball’s Most Interesting Person in Baseball heading into 2016.

The choice is less clear this year. But again Hardball will pick an executive facing ever-intensifying heat to win it all. When Andrew Friedman joined the Dodgers as president of baseball operations after the 2014 season and surrounded himself with former general managers, he forged the most expensive front office ever and one expected to give Los Angeles cutting-edge thinking combined with deeper pockets than any team.

17 MOST INTRIGUING MLB PEOPLE FOR ‘17

12. Gary Sanchez, C, Yankees

He’s a 24-year-old catcher with just 55 games under his belt, and yet it feels fair to call him the face of the New York Yankees. Sanchez hit 20 bombs in only 201 at-bats, a pace that would put him in position to become just the third Yankee ever to log 60 in a single season (hopefully you know the names of the other two). Don’t hold your breath there, but do expect Sanchez’s sophomore adjustment to go a long way toward determining whether the Yanks can rebuild and contend consecutively. ....

6. Pablo Sandoval, 3B, Red Sox

Assuming his winter conditioning holds up, Pablo Sandoval won’t be breaking any belts this year. But because luxury tax restraints have, barring a late surprise, prevented Dave Dombrowski from delving deeply into the market for bats, the Red Sox do appear to have a lot riding on Sandoval, Andrew Benintendi and the newly signed Mitch Moreland offsetting the loss of David Ortiz’s left-handed production.

Meet the Danny Espinosa All-Stars - SweetSpot- ESPN

Shouldn’t this be called the Rob Deer All Stars?

Second Base: Ryan Schimpf, Padres

Schimpf hit .217 in little more than half a season as a rookie with the Padres, but he showed elite power, hitting 20 home runs, including 13 on the road.

Something to watch: Schimpf qualified for this lineup because of a late-season skid in which he struck out 41 times in 90 at-bats in his last 28 games. He’s going to need to make adjustments in his second season.
