385 Feet To Center? It’s Going to be a Blast

Have you ever been to London? What are you most looking forward to there?

Marcus Walden, Red Sox relief pitcher: No. The biggest thing that I would never really do, but I’m going to do, is The Eye, the big ol’ carousel thing. That’s something I rarely do. I don’t like heights. I don’t like doing it, but my wife said I have to go. That’s the one thing I would never do but I’m gonna do. I don’t know a whole lot about London. Walking around is going to be cool. My cousin is married to a professor at Oxford. She gave me a list of things that I need to go see. It’ll be cool to have her come into the game and have them show us around.

Just some conversations ahead of the London Series with players on both teams.  Some fun bits of humanity in here.

APNewsBreak: Cubs-Cards set for London on June 13-14 in 2020

NEW YORK (AP) β€” The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals are set to play at London next season in a two-game series at West Ham’s Olympic Stadium on June 13 and 14.

St. Louis will be the home team for both games, according to a draft of the 2020 preliminary schedule obtained by The Associated Press.

Chicago will be at Philadelphia from June 8-10, then has a pair of off days. The Cubs will be off June 15 and then start a homestand at Wrigley Field against the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox.

“I’ve had experience traveling over there and the time difference is pretty dramatic, especially when you go that way,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday. “When you come back, you’re always able to catch up, when you’re going back in time as opposed to forward in time. I don’t even know what to expect in something like that. You know your head’s going to be swimming a little bit, you’ve got that brain fog, you just do.”

My advance apology to all Londoners for subjecting you to the Cardinals, much less as a home team….

APNewsBreak: Yanks, Red Sox play on artificial turf London

The traditional rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will take a radical twist when they meet in London next month: They will play on artificial turf for the first time in more than 2,200 games over a century.

Major League Baseball has access to Olympic Stadium for 21 days before the games on June 29 and 30, the sport’s first regular-season contests in Europe, and just five days after to clear out. The league concluded there was not enough time to install real grass.

Starting June 6, gravel will be placed over the covering protecting West Ham’s grass soccer pitch and the running track that is a legacy from the 2012 Olympics . The artificial turf baseball field, similar to modern surfaces used by a few big league clubs, will be installed atop that.

“It’s the first Yankees-Red Sox game out of the country, so why not a lot of firsts?” New York pitcher CC Sabathia said. “I think it will be fine.”

Wonder what Tug McGraw would have thought of this….

The Cubs and Cardinals are reportedly set to play in London next year

Back in February, the rumor started floating around that the Cubs and Cardinals could be one of the rivalries to head to London in 2020 for a series.

That appears to now be a reality, as USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale reported Thursday evening:

....

The Yankees and Red Sox are set to play in London this summer (June 29-30).

No word yet on which team β€” the Cubs or Cardinals β€” would be the “home” team in London or who would lose a series at their home ballpark.

Wait- I thought the point of these games was to increase the popularity of baseball in Europe, not damage the sport.
