MLBTR: Rays To Acquire Lucas Duda

The Duda now abides in St. Pete.

Though the Rays have their own breakout offensive performer at first in Logan Morrison, the team has room for another big left-handed bat. With outfielder Colby Rasmus hanging up his spikes mid-way through the year, the Rays could utilize Corey Dickerson in the outfield to allow Duda to step in at DH.

Smith, 23, was a third-round pick in the 2015 draft. He made his way to the Rays as the player to be named later in the winter deal that sent Mikie Mahtook to the Tigers. It seems he could be a contributor in New York as soon as the present season, though the Mets likely won’t be in a rush to add him to the 40-man roster.

With a big fastball and quality curve, Smith looks as if he could turn into a steady and affordable MLB relief asset. The MLB.com prospect team ranked him 30th on the Tampa Bay farm, noting that his upside is as a setup arm. Smith threw 28 2/3 innings of 2.20 ERA ball at the High-A level upon landing with the Rays organization and recently ascended to Triple-A after a quick stop at the penultimate level of the minors.

Weighing Yankees’ 1st-base trades, which are crucial for Matt Holliday

In theory, they could acquire someone such as Atlanta’s Matt Adams, Texas’ Mike Napoli or Toronto’s Kendrys Morales with the idea that they are the first basemen the rest of this year and then become the DH next year, providing also a better security blanket for Bird, who so far has shown a penchant for both injuries and slow healing. But that would mean not bringing back Matt Holliday, who has proven an asset as both a hitter and a clubhouse sage, particularly for Aaron Judge.

Anyway, some thoughts on which way the Yankees could go:

1. Alonso: Oakland VP of baseball operations Billy Beane is one of Cashman’s best friends, yet they have made one minor trade (involving Jeff Francis) in the past 14 years. Alonso has had a breakout season, and the Yankees could obtain him and use this as a cameo to decide whether they want to sign him long-term — though keep in mind the Yanks have so many prospects coming and, thus, might want to keep the DH spot as a revolving door.

Mets give Lucas Duda insurance policy a test drive at first base | New York Post

Bruce was tested twice against the Astros. In the second inning, Wilmer Flores bounced a throw from third base that Bruce scooped to record the final out. In the fourth, Bruce fielded a grounder and flipped to Jacob deGrom covering the bag for the final out. On that play, Bruce hesitated on his flip — a brief miscommunication — before getting the ball to deGrom.

“You’ve got to get the ball to Jake a little quicker,” Collins said. “But I saw stuff [Bruce] can learn and thought he handled himself well.”

Mets’ Duda, Who Had Back Trouble in 2016, Is Now Bothered by His Hips - The New York Times

Duda felt stiffness in his back and his hips after a recent workout. Although his back improved, his hips remained troublesome, Collins said, prompting Duda to receive a cortisone shot in each hip on Friday.

Collins said he had received no indication that the stiffness in Duda’s hips was related to last year’s back injury, but everything in the lower body is connected, he noted.

“We’re very fortunate at this time we’ve still got a ton of camp left,” Collins said.
