Could Madison Bumgarner’s bad road stats hurt him in MLB free agency?

Madison Bumgarner is entering free agency at a curious time in his career. The longtime Giants ace has built a legendary reputation, but plenty of question marks also surround the 30-year-old.

Bumgarner proved he’s still a workhorse after missing time the previous two seasons with freak injuries. His 34 starts were tied for the MLB lead, and his 207 2/3 innings pitched ranked second in the NL.

But while looking at Bumgarner’s stats from this past season, one thing stands out that could hurt him in free agency and actually help the Giants if they want to bring back the left-hander.

MadBum’s home-road splits were staggering in 2019. He was a completely different pitcher in front of the home crowd at Oracle Park, compared to pitching away from San Francisco.

Mind you, with free agency working as it has lately, will we necessarily be able to tell much of a difference?

Giants’ Madison Bumgarner convinced balls are juiced: ‘No denying it’

Madison Bumgarner isn’t one to mince words, and recently the Giants starting pitcher said what everyone’s been thinking.

The balls are juiced.

“There’s no denying it,” Bumgarner told The San Francisco Chronicle. “I don’t think anybody at this point is denying the ball is different. It’s definitely different, and it’s affecting a lot of the all-time stats.”

The proof is in the pudding, as they say, and a simple glance at the home run leaderboard serves to confirm Bumgarner’s suspicion. While New York’s Pete Alonso is the only player thus far to reach the 50-homer plateau, there are another seven players in the forties, and another 47 in the thirties.

Mind you, it’s not so much that he’s wrong, and more that he’s a little late to the parade…..

Here are baseball’s top 20 free agents to be

If it feels like last year’s free agency just ended, that’s because it did. The “winter” technically stretched into early June, when Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel finally signed with the Braves and Cubs, respectively.

But it won’t be very long until we fire up free agency yet again, and, despite some rumors to the contrary, there’s a ton of talent on the table after the 2019 World Series wraps.

Here, we’ll take a look at some early free-agent power rankings (20 players for 2020). But like so much of life, it gets complicated. The market will be drastically affected by what happens with various opt-outs and option clauses. For this list, we’re going to leave off guys whose options are likely to be exercised or whose opt-outs aren’t. This currently applies to Kenley Jansen, David Price, Corey Kluber, Anthony Rizzo, Starling Marte, Nelson Cruz, José Quintana, Yu Darvish and Elvis Andrus, among others. But as always, stay tuned!

We will, however, include a few others who aren’t necessarily as likely to remain attached to their current contracts, and have noted those with an asterisk (*). All ages as of Opening Day 2020.

So, what thoughts do we have concerning this list?

Madison Bumgarner never expected Giants to trade him, ready to work

PHILADELPHIA—The trades came quickly, sending shockwaves throughout the sport and delivering a couple of body blows to the visiting clubhouse at Citizens Bank Park. Madison Bumgarner briefly looked up at a clubhouse TV at 4:10 p.m. and then walked to his locker and grabbed his glove, running outside for a quick game of catch before the rain came.

Bumgarner had work to do, and he had to do it for the Giants.

After months of trade rumors and a frantic final hour, the Giants ultimately decided to hold their ace.

“I never expected to be somewhere else until that happened,” Bumgarner said. “Nothing has changed for me. I don’t look at it as being past a hurdle. I’ve got a job to do and I’m going to do it.”

Well, why should the dominant team in one of the largest- and richest- markets in all of North America raise the white flag, especially with the National League as unsettled as it is?

Madison Bumgarner trade isn’t what Pablo Sandoval wants to see Giants do

If that was Madison Bumgarner’s final home start in a Giants uniform, Pablo Sandoval made sure it’d be a memorable one.

In the bottom of the 13th inning Tuesday night at Oracle Park, Sandoval sent the home fans happy when he drilled a walk-off home run to the opposite field off Cubs reliever Brad Brach.

Earlier in the game, Bumgarner continued his recent hot stretch, limiting Chicago to three runs and six hits over seven innings before giving way to San Francisco’s bullpen, which proceeded to pitch six innings of one-run ball.

No one had the heart to explain to Sandoval that his leverage on such matters is somewhere between slim and nil, and Slim just left town….

Max Muncy trades verbal barbs with Madison Bumgarner in Dodgers’ win - Los Angeles Times

By the time Muncy rounded first the two were in a full-blown argument, screaming and gesturing at each other. Plate umpire Will Little intervened, but the two were still jawing at each other as Muncy pulled into the plate.

“He took exception to me watching the ball, I guess,” Muncy said of Bumgarner. “He said, ‘You don’t watch the ball. You run.’ ”

And Muncy’s response?

“I told him, ‘If you don’t want me to watch the ball, you can go in the ocean and get it,’ ” he said. “I don’t even know if he heard it. As I was rounding the bases, I yelled it at him. He was yelling at me. We were kind of going back and forth and that was it. Just a couple guys competing.”

MLB Rumors: Phillies, Yankees Scouted Giants’ Madison Bumgarner Recently

Some interested teams reportedly got a good look at Madison Bumgarner recently.

The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees were among “several clubs” who scouted the Giants ace in his second-to-last start last Saturday, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Wednesday.  Bumgarner pitched 6 1/3 innings that day, striking out six and allowing four earned runs in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Phillies and Yankees both reportedly feel they could use a top-line starter, although both teams entered Friday in the top 10 in earned run average. Still, both teams are on Bumgarner’s no-trade list.

What might be a bigger deal to the Giants, however, is the quality of both team’s prospects.

Rather painful to watch in multiple regards- the dominant team in one of the largest and wealthiest metropolitan areas in the United States should never be in this position….

Madison Bumgarner And Yasiel Puig Are Making Their Long-Distance Hatred For One Another Still Work

It hasn’t been easy for Madison Bumgarner and Yasiel Puig to continue hating each other as fiercely as they once did now that Puig has moved away to the Midwest. The former in-state proximity between the two players allowed them to share an angry bond built on bat-flipping and batter-beaning. With Puig in Cincinnati, it wasn’t clear if they were going to be able to keep that intensity going. But on Sunday, the two showed that there were still was some sparks left in their feuding relationship.

It started on Puig’s end in the top of the sixth inning. With nobody on and nobody out, Puig smoked a 92-mph fastball from Bumgarner into the left-field seats. Knowing what he had just done, the Red decided to take some time to admire that handiwork on his long-time nemesis and threw his bat once he got done looking at the dinger.

For those of you who like a good feud….

Report: Bumgarner submits 8-team no-trade list

Leverage to do what? If he doesn’t sign in SF, it’s clearly in his best interest to get traded.

Now, the fact that those teams are on Bumgarner’s list doesn’t necessarily mean he wants to avoid them. Rather, it’s a way for Bumgarner to gain some leverage over his situation, as the eight teams are all contenders that could be interested in acquiring him before the non-waiver Trade Deadline.

As Rosenthal notes, Bumgarner will likely be motivated to approve a trade because players who are dealt during the season are not eligible to receive a qualifying offer in free agency the following offseason.

Up until the next year’s MLB Draft, teams need to forfeit one or more picks to sign a free agent who rejected a qualifying offer, which can sometimes put a damper on a player’s free-agent value. That is believed to be one of the reasons why Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel remain unsigned, as both players rejected qualifying offers. The market for each player is expected to pick up once the Draft passes June 3-5.

LEADING OFF: Ohtani nears Angels return, biding Bumgarner

A look at what’s happening around the majors Tuesday:

OHTANI ON DECK

AL Rookie of the Year Shohei Ohtani will join the Angels in Detroit this week and could be set to make his season debut. The two-way star has been recovering from Tommy John surgery and isn’t expected to pitch this year. But his swing is fine and Los Angeles intends to use Ohtani as its designated hitter.

The Angels say Ohtani will wear an arm guard when he bats and runs the bases. The 24-year-old hit .285 with 22 home runs last season.

Briefly wondered where Bumgarner ranked relative to clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades- then I realized it said “biding”, not “bidding”....

Madison Bumgarner is forcing contenders to consider trade with Giants

Madison Bumgarner did not get off to the strongest start to 2019. But don’t look now, because the Giants ace just might be finding the form that made him one of the top pitchers in the game.

Bumgarner is coming off his best performance of the still-young season, giving up only one run in six innings to the NL West rival Dodgers on Wednesday. That prompted catcher Buster Posey to say the left-hander displayed “the best stuff he’s had all year.”

As it turns out, Posey wasn’t blowing smoke. Bumgarner was ... or was throwing it, rather.

As ESPN’s Buster Olney points out, Bumgarner’s average fastball velocity in the Giants’ win was 91.9 mph—essentially the same as it was in 2015, when the lefty arguably had his best season as a pro. He also generated 18 missed swings, his most in any start since September 2016 (also against the Dodgers). All 18 missed swings came on fastballs.

Mind you, this sort of trade talk is really only meaningful if there’s any sense of what the Giants could get in return….
