2019 San Francisco Giants Season Preview: How far has Madison Bumgarner fallen?

The San Francisco Giants are stuck between two competing ideas — embracing the rebuild and spinning off any valuable members of their championship core or trying to keep up with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres in the NL West.

It seemed pretty obvious what the Giants should do after their 89-loss season in 2018. Without a bright farm system, this Giants team screams tear down. They did bring in a new president of baseball operations in ex-Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi. And then they chased Bryce Harper. But as opening day approaches, they’re not in tremendously better than shape than when last season ended. They only thing they got was more healthy.

While Giants fans can make a compelling case for adding Harper, it still would have seemed a bit like their last couple offseasons, where they’ve acted boldly in an effort to keep their winning tradition going. These Giants are now saddled with unfortunate contracts and/or injured players.

I don’t know- it seems offensive somehow for the dominant team in one of the richest markets in baseball to have to engage in the tear-down strategy.

Giants’ turmoil ahead with Madison Bumgarner, Jeff Samardzija? - SFChronicle.com

Jeff Samardzija needs to worry about getting outs first otherwise the only action he’ll be getting is mop up duty.

When Giants starter Jeff Samardzija recently called the concept of openers “a load of crap,” and Madison Bumgarner seemed of a like mind, it looked like the team could be heading for friction and turmoil this season.

But it’s spring training, for goodness’ sake, a time to be positive.

So, the Giants are perfectly positioned to help major-league baseball ease into the new creative use of pitchers era.

Samardzija told The Chronicle’s John Shea that pitchers who accept the “opener” concept — a normal relief pitcher pitching the first inning — are like sheep. Wimpy sheep.

Madison Bumgarner: ‘I’m walking right out of the ballpark’ if Giants use opener with ace

Madison Bumgarner’s thoughts on the opener movement that hit MLB during the 2018 season are about what you would expect: he is extremely not a fan.

During an appearance at the San Francisco Giants FanFest on Saturday, manager Bruce Bochy mentioned that he received a text from the team’s ace after new president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said the team might make use of an opener. The contents of the text were basically a threat.

The good news for Bumgarner and whoever would have to tell Bumgarner the team is using an opener is that the Giants are probably not going to be using an opener in front of Bumgarner.

Mind you, given his luck with injuries the last couple of seasons, his leverage on this subject is fairly minimal….

Madison Bumgarner to Brewers Blockbuster Would Create Cubs’ Worst 2019 Nightmare

The Milwaukee Brewers aren’t out to knock the Chicago Cubs from the National League Central throne. They already did that in 2018. Their goal for 2019 is to keep the status quo.

This explains their interest in Madison Bumgarner. According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the San Francisco Giants have had “substantive communication” about the ace left-hander with the Brewers, who represent his “most likely destination” in a trade.

It’s not guaranteed that the Giants will indeed move Bumgarner. There thus far hasn’t been any indication that they hired general manager Farhan Zaidi away from the Los Angeles Dodgers just so he could carry out a rebuild. They seem to be more in a retooling mode.

Isn’t the Cubs’ worst nightmare for 2019 a year where Jason Heyward hits like he did in 2016, fields like he did last year, and still leads the team in WAR?

Duane Kuiper: Giants will trade a pitcher but not Madison Bumgarner

It’s been a relatively quiet offseason for Bay Area baseball teams. And unless you’re the Mets or Mariners, you more than likely had a still offseason as well.

But as far as the Giants go, the question remains whether or not the team will trade Madison Bumgarner.

Well, despite multiple reports that this unicorn of a trade may not happen, the discussion has never gone away—especially for Duane Kuiper. In an interview with KNBR on Wednesday, the Giants broadcaster said he believes MadBum isn’t the pitcher that will be dealt away.

Why Madison Bumgarner trade now seems more likely at July deadline

LAS VEGAS — When the Giants arrived here on Sunday, Madison Bumgarner was their Opening Day starter. After four days of circulated casino air, room service, $7 cups of coffee, a few rumors and one minor transaction, Madison Bumgarner is still their Opening Day starter.

That still could change, though.

While the Giants are not close to any deals and have not gotten close, multiple sources familiar with their discussions said this week that the front office is still fully ready to trade the franchise’s ace if the right deal comes along. The Giants have come to grips with the reality of making such a move, but also believe at this point that if they are to trade Bumgarner, the best deal likely will come before the July 31 trade deadline.

An interesting point to ponder, especially as it ties so heavily with both how the Giants view themselves and how the paths they can take could lead them to very different trajectories.

MLB rumors: Giants’ Madison Bumgarner not ‘going anywhere’ in trade

It seems more and more likely that the Giants will not trade Madison Bumgarner. At least not right now.

On Friday, a Giants source told Fancred’s Jon Heyman that the writer shouldn’t expect a Bumgarner trade to happen anytime soon.

This latest Bumgarner report comes just two days after ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that evaluators in contact with the Giants don’t believe the team is serious about trading Bumgarner. Front offices will call, but for now, it sounds like one of the team’s all-time legends is staying put.

So, how long before this state of affairs changes?

Determining Madison Bumgarner’s future will be Farhan Zaidi’s first Giant decision

The ink on Farhan Zaidi’s contract as the new San Francisco Giants general manager was barely dry Wednesday when he was asked the question weighing on the mind of every Giants fan.

Is it possible, and perhaps even necessary, that he seeks to trade the franchise’s longtime ace and multiple time World Series hero, Madison Bumgarner?

The question itself was as straight forward as it gets. As for the response? It was not surprisingly vague.

Mind you, with pitchers, the future tends to be something beyond the ken of any general manager….

As expected, Giants exercise options on Madison Bumgarner, Pablo Sandoval

In moves that were expected, the Giants on Monday exercised their 2019 contract options on pitcher Madison Bumgarner and infielder Pablo Sandoval.

Bumgarner will earn at least $12 million in the final year of the long-term deal he signed in 2012. That is the listed salary, but it likely has grown some through escalators based on performance milestones.

The Giants again will pay Sandoval the major-league minimum, around $545,000, in the final year of the five-year deal he signed with Boston after the 2014 season. The Red Sox will pay the rest of his $18.6 million salary.

A collection of various baseball briefs- quite a bit here to discuss if anyone has the interest…

Maidson Bumgarner doesn’t think Friday was his last start for Giants

SAN FRANCISCO — Just before the All-Star break, Giants coaches sat down and mapped out their second-half rotation. They have known for months that they could push Madison Bumgarner back to this final series if it gave them a leg up in the NL West race.

This team, of course, is nowhere near contention. It’s been that way for a while. But the Giants still pushed Bumgarner back two days, giving him a big stage for his final start of the season and the opportunity to all but knock the Dodgers out of contention in the division.

That the offense didn’t deliver was no surprise. But it was a bit when Bumgarner made it through just six, allowing three runs, and two coming on a big Justin Turner homer with a runner on and the game tied. This, a 3-1 loss, was not the way he hoped to end his 2018 season.

“However, I may be inclined to change my mind if you spell my name wrong in the header for your article”, he said later.

On a serious note: How much trade value does Bumgarner really have at this point? He’s been injured two seasons in a row (missing the equivalent of almost a full season), was never hyper-dazzling as a pitcher, and (if this last season means anything) seems to have lost the value with the bat he added back in 2014-2015. How much would any team give up for that, especially as the Giants have a really large number of holes to fill and will presumably be trying to fill as many as possible?
