Machado homers, admires ball in first at-bat against Kershaw

Manny Machado went from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the San Diego Padres this offseason, and now he’s starting to punish his former team.

In his first at-bat against Clayton Kershaw on Friday, Machado took the Dodgers ace deep to left, and then admired the ball.

He even tipped his own cap.

I forget- under the unwritten rules, should Machado expect a fastball to the goolies, or to be chased by folk with aluminum baseball bats?

Adam Jones: Manny Machado would “one hundred percent” be treated differently if he were white

Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Jones is well aware of the way race affects how players are treated. In 2017, when Jones was with the Orioles, fans at Fenway Park spat racist epithets and taunts, and threw peanuts at him. Major League Baseball and the Red Sox apologized to Jones, but his account of the incident was widely disputed by the usual suspects.

Last week in Arizona, Padres third baseman Manny Machado was called for interference after hitting a pop-up. Machado put his head down and very gently lobbed his bat like so many hitters do after making contact. Machado never touched catcher John Ryan Murphy as he attempted to catch the pop-up, but was called for interference nevertheless. The Diamondbacks broadcasters, Steve Berthiaume and Bob Brenly exoriated Machado, calling his actions “bush league.” The pair went on to rake Machado over the coals, with Brenly fantasizing about Machado getting “dropped in his tracks” by the wrong guy. Berthiaume later exclaimed, “300 million dollars!”

Machado, whose reputation does precede him, earned himself few friends in the postseason last year against the Brewers. In Game 2 of the NLCS, Machado didn’t run out a grounder. He later told Ken Rosenthal on the FS1 broadcast, “Obviously, I’m not going to change. I’m not the type of player that’s going to be ‘Johnny Hustle’ and run down the line and slide to first base and … you know, whatever can happen. That’s just not my personality, that’s not my cup of tea, that’s not who I am.”

Did Padres stars lobby owner to promote top prospect Fernando Tatis Jr.?

We’ve reached a contentious point in the relationship between Major League Baseball’s players and owners. The tensions have risen so fast and so furiously following consecutive winters of jilted free agents, that many fear a work stoppage is inevitable once the current collective bargaining expires in December 2021, and perhaps even sooner.

But a new report has given us some hope, slight as it might be, that finding common ground is at least possible if the two sides are willing to sit down, talk, and even more importantly, listen.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that’s exactly what happened when San Diego Padres stars Manny Machado and Eric Hosmer recently took owner Ron Fowler out to dinner. The players were there to talk business, the report says. The business of winning. To do that, they felt Fowler had to break away from a common practice used by his fellow owners, so they made a proposal.

Interesting piece, with some points of particular interest given what we’ve seen in the sport in the last few years.

Familiar teams favored in MLB despite shifting stars

Washington (AFP) - Superstar sluggers Bryce Harper and Manny Machado will try to turn their new clubs into title contenders but mostly familiar teams figure to dominate this year’s Major League Baseball championship chase.

After a two-game debut in Tokyo that was basically a farewell celebration for Japanese legend Ichiro Suzuki, the major league campaign opens in earnest on Thursday in North American venues.

Harper, a six-time All-Star outfielder, never went deeper than four first-round playoff exits in seven seasons with Washington before signing with the Philadelphia Phillies for 13 years at $330 million earlier this month.

In other words, kind of what we’d expect after the last off-season.

Machado brings Manny Mania to rebuilding Padres

SAN DIEGO (AP) — When word of Manny Machado’s $300 million, 10-year contract with the San Diego Padres broke early in spring training, team officials wouldn’t immediately confirm the deal because the All-Star slugger still had to pass a physical.

But that didn’t keep general partner Peter Seidler, a nephew of former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Pete O’Malley, from expressing what a monumental move it was for a franchise that had mostly stumbled and bumbled through its 50-year history.

While executive chairman Ron Fowler played the straight man at an impromptu news conference, Seidler couldn’t keep from smiling. He then essentially confirmed that yes, the rebuilding Padres had actually pulled off the splashiest move in their history.

Take a good, long look, folks- this very well may be the last time people ever get excited for Manny Machado.

MLB preview: Five bold predictions for upcoming season

There is going to be plenty of turnover for the 2019 MLB season.

The game is changing and that is driving much of our projections for the year.

With that being said, here are five bold predictions for the 2019 season

For the most part, these predictions don’t feel all that bold- anyone here tempted to make bolder ones?

Manny Machado: ‘I will always be the villain, no matter what’

San Diego Padres infielder Manny Machado knows money won’t fix his reputation. While the 26-year-old Machado has a lot to be happy about after signing a 10-year, $300 million deal in the offseason, he also knows many fans will still view him as a villain moving forward, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Machado isn’t sure why that’s the case.

“I always will be the villain, no matter what,” Machado said. “I don’t know why. That is just stuff I have to deal with and I have been okay dealing with that situation. That doesn’t bother me.”

Having come to this realization, Machado decided he might as well lean fully into it, and excused himself so that he could tie ladies to the railroad tracks.

In interview, Kenny Williams addresses fan anger and the fallout of White Sox missing out on Manny Machado and Bryce Harper

Manny Machado is still a San Diego Padre. Bryce Harper is still a Philadelphia Phillie. And White Sox fans are still angry.

No, nothing’s changed since earlier Thursday, when Harper broke Machado’s week-and-change-old record for the biggest free-agent contract in the history of American pro sports, officially leaving the White Sox empty handed in their pursuits of the two biggest names on this offseason’s free-agent market.

Neither guy ended up on the South Side, despite the fact that the team went after both, going especially hard on Machado, to the point where general manager Rick Hahn and team vice president Kenny Williams seemed blindsided when the 26-year-old infielder spurned them for the Padres last week.

One of the consequences with how long the free agency cycles have been lasting- the resentment of the GMs who don’t do the big signings seems to get even larger…..

Manny Machado on the Orioles: ‘I did a lot for the state, and they didn’t show me a little bit of love’

He talked about how the Orioles failed to show him “love” — presumably alluding to the fact that they didn’t sign their former first-round draft pick to a long-term contract and traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers after he represented the Orioles in the All-Star Game last July.
“The Dodgers last year, they showed me some love,” he said. “The Orioles drafted me. I did a lot for that community, I did a lot for the state, and they didn’t show me a little bit of love. It is what it is. But going over to L.A., L.A. giving up a lot of prospects for me, that kind of shows you what I meant to them, which is amazing.”
Of course, there’s been very little talk of the Dodgers having made any offer to him in the offseason, either.

Yankees GM says ‘you can’t have’em all’ after not signing Manny Machado

When a major free agent hits the open market, it’s always anticipated that the New York Yankees will emerge as a primary suitor. It’s an expectation that never really changes, regardless of who the free agent is, how large the Yankees payroll is, or what the team’s actual needs might be.

So when an elite infielder like Manny Machado, who’s already a four-time All-Star, who’s still only 26 years old with his prime years ahead of him, and who’s desire to play for the Yankees seemed clear, everyone waited to see how aggressive general manager Brian Cashman would be.

And then they kept waiting… and waiting… and waiting, only to learn after Machado agreed to a 10-year, $300 million with the San Diego Padres that the Yankees never formally made an offer.

On the bright side, the Marlins are rapidly becoming a farm club for the Yankees, so there’s that…

Report: Manny Machado will accommodate Padres’ top prospect with move back to third base

Manny Machado just signed the biggest free agent contract in the history of North American sports. And yet, he likely won’t ever be playing his favored position again if the San Diego Padres’ plan works out.

After spending a full year playing shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers, the Padres’ new $300 million man has agreed to move back to third base for his San Diego tenure. The reason why: Fernando Tatis Jr., widely considered the top shortstop prospect in baseball.

That might be an unexpected development for some, but it’s definitely welcome news for those who miss Machado’s absurd web gems at third base and cringed at his defensive numbers in 2018. And it’s also telling just how highly the Padres and the rest of baseball think of Tatis.

Well, that saves us from that nightmare, it appears….

With Machado to Padres, Phillies say they won’t be pressured into a Bryce Harper deal. Now what? – The Athletic

The Machado signing shows that emotion is still part of the process. How many of emotionally motivated signs work out?

Machado’s record deal generates a fascinating dynamic because, over the coming days and weeks, the Phillies will have to make a choice between entertaining fans and running a business. Klentak spoke Tuesday like a callous bookkeeper because he knows agent Scott Boras is listening. And Boras knows the vast amount of pressure on Klentak to land his client, Bryce Harper, no matter the cost. Every public statement and every piece of leaked information has an agenda.

This much became evident on Tuesday: The Phillies had a limit with Machado. They have a limit with Harper. These consultations have included and are supported by owner John Middleton, who has been in Clearwater since the start of spring training.

MLB notebook: Padres reportedly offer Machado up to $280 million

The San Diego Padres are willing to sign free agent infielder Manny Machado to an eight-year contract worth between $240 million and $280 million, USA Today reported on Monday.

The contract offer includes “heavily deferred” compensation, the newspaper said, citing two people familiar with the negotiations.

Machado also has received an offer from the Chicago White Sox. While the exact offer isn’t known, and various reports have been disputed, it is believed to be in the seven-year, $175 million ballpark.

Assuming this is accurate, that would be between $30,000,000 to $35,000,000 per year- wondering what other bids there will be….

Manny Machado reportedly met with Padres GM in Miami

The San Diego Padres’ pursuit of Manny Machado continued with a reported face-to-face meeting earlier this week in Miami.

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Padres general manager A.J. Preller made the cross-country flight to Miami to meet with Machado and his wife. It’s the second meeting the Padres and Machado have had this offseason, but this one clearly has a more personal feel. Acee termed the meeting “a step that indicates the sides continue to work toward a possible agreement.”

The Padres’ interest in Machado has gradually increased the longer he’s remained available. San Diego has also been a late entry into the Bryce Harper sweepstakes. Members of the Padres front office recently flew to Harper’s hometown of Las Vegas to meet with the free agent and his representation.

Quite frankly, any non-Miami-based team meeting with a player in Miami seems more plausible than the Marlins doing so….

White Sox still waiting for Manny Machado

GLENDALE, Ariz.—The Chicago White Sox opened spring training still waiting for Manny Machado.

“We’ll just see when it happens,” first baseman Yonder Alonso, Machado’s brother-in-law, said Wednesday.

Machado, among the offseason’s top free agents, still hasn’t agreed to a deal. Alonso spoke with the All-Star infielder on Tuesday.

Waiting For Manny Machado is commonly regarded as a legendary play in the Theatre of the Absurd.

Report: White Sox offered Machado an eight-year, $250 million deal

Free agent Manny Machado doesn’t appear any closer to accepting a major league deal these days, but we may be starting to get a better idea of the offers that are on the table — at least when it comes to the White Sox. Héctor Gómez of Z Digital reports that the club proposed an eight-year, $250 million offer to Machado, a full $75 million above the previously (and erroneously) reported seven-year, $175 million deal that was said to be in play. Naturally, neither Machado’s agent nor the White Sox have confirmed the report.

So, passing on a $31.25 million/year offer- wondering what that means for the offers he’s hoping to get….

We Put Bryce Harper And Manny Machado On A Bunch Of Different Teams

We are now less than a week away from almost all pitchers and catchers reporting, and the two biggest free agents on the market — Manny Machado and Bryce Harper — have yet to sign. The rumor mill around them continues to swirl, but we’re tired of not knowing for sure where these two will play this year. So we thought we’d take matters into our own hands, instead of simply waiting around for the latest hot-stove updates.

To that end, we called on our friends at Out of the Park Baseball (OOTP), a strategic simulation game that allows players to put on their general manager hats and run their own teams. We asked them to simulate out the careers of Harper and Machado a bunch of times under scenarios where they sign with a bunch of different teams. Think of it as the multiverse of MLB possibilities that still could play out, depending on where these two superstars end up signing.

The topic that has dominated the hot-stove season, as fed through a computer program.

Padres are now chasing Manny Machado

According to multiple sources aware of talks between the sides but not authorized to speak publicly, the Padres are pursuing the 26-year-old superstar with the intention of playing him at third base.

The team has refined its focus to free agents (versus a trade) with the hope of filling the position before spring training.

The Padres became players in the pursuit of Machado a week ago when reports surfaced of a price that was far lower than expected.

Macahdo’s agent denied the reports of seven years and $175 million, and it is believed it will take more than that to land the player who over the past four seasons has an .856 OPS and 142 home runs. However, the market is limited, and the Padres are believed to be legitimate suitors.

The Phillies are very much in on Bryce Harper, Manny Machado but won’t sign both

The Philadelphia Phillies remain the most fascinating team in the sweepstakes for Bryce Harper and Manny Machado because they’ve said they’re going to spend “stupid money” this offseason and, as far as we know, are in on both Machado and Harper.

But now there’s this: They’re making it clear they won’t sign Machado and Harper.

Source: White Sox offer to Manny Machado ‘was for less than 8 years’

Despite reports that the White Sox have made an eight-year offer to Manny Machado, their offer to the free agent infielder “was for less than 8 years and less money than has been reported,” a source has told NBC Sports Chicago.

The financial details of that offer are not completely known, but I’m told the White Sox have not changed their stance on either money or terms since making their initial offer, thought to be around $200 million.

Although it has often been projected that Machado could sign a contract north of 10 years and $300 million, a 7-year, $200 million offer, for example, would be comparable to the 7-year, $210 million contract Max Scherzer signed with the Washington Nationals in 2015. At $30 million, Scherzer’s is the third highest average annual salary in MLB history. The offer to Machado would also come close to the 6-year, $206.5 million contract Zack Greinke signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2016. Greinke’s $34.4 million average annual salary is tops in MLB history.

Bryce Harper, Manny Machado mystery teams

This.

1. Giants
Things have been entirely too quiet around the Giants. Some of it is new president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi putting together a front office staff and assessing his needs. Since he has not traded away Madison Bumgarner, his most valuable asset, that could be a tipoff that the Giants aren’t diving into any kind of rebuild. What they need more than anything is an impact offensive player or two, preferably an outfielder. Signing Harper would insert the Giants back into the postseason conversation and also give the franchise a foundational piece to build on for the next decade or so.

Social media helps Hal Steinbrenner on decision-making for Yankees

How many big contracts can the Yankees absorb? I see analysts suggesting that it’s outrageous if the Yankees don’t sign Manny. It’s not though. Big contracts can’t be signed without considering your future salary commitments. The checks also can’t be written without factoring in the economic limits of the current CBA (Luxury Tex, etc.), which were **collectively bargained**. You also can’t ignore the players you already have on your 40-Man and in your pipeline.(Your players impact Machado’s marginal value.)

Judge, Severino, and Sanchez are all going to get expensive pretty quick. Right behind them the Yankees have Andujar and Torres. Machado is reported looking for an 8+ year contract at an AAV of $35 million plus. That’s a contract which impacts the team finances and overlaps the free agent years of all these players.

Could the Yankees make it work? Possibly. Is it outrageous they might not think it’s a good deal for them? Absolutely not.

MLB Rumors: ‘Mystery Team’ Involved In Manny Machado Sweepstakes

The Manny Machado sweepstakes were narrowed to two teams Friday, or so we thought.

The New York Yankees appeared to withdraw consideration for Machado’s services when they reportedly agreed to terms with veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu. Not to mention, a new report indicated not all Yankees executives were on board with the idea of bringing Machado to The Bronx.

As such, the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox became the effective front runners to sign Machado in free agency. But according to Fancred’s Jon Heyman, it still might be a three-horse race to acquire the four-time All-Star.

Are your blindfolds on, panel?

In that case, we begin the questioning of our Mystery Team with Dorothy Kilgallen. Ms. Kilgallen?
