Two Little Birds: How Baltimore’s Best Hitting and Pitching Prospects Finally Came Good

Five years after they were both top-10 prospects, Machado and Bundy are now 24 years old, the best position player and pitcher, respectively, on a contending Orioles team. They’ve made good on the hype, and while Bundy’s lost years will keep him from reaching free agency until after 2021, Machado’s already deep into arbitration, making $11.5 million this year, with a chance for a couple hundred million more when he hits free agency after next season. So if someone from the future had visited them on draft day and offered them their current careers, what would they have said?

“I would’ve thought you’d been wrong,” Bundy said. “When I was 18 or 19 years old I wouldn’t have thought my arm would ever get hurt.”

Machado was equivocal until I rephrased the question: Is he happy with how his career’s turned out?
“Wouldn’t you be? I’m in the big leagues for six years and I’m enjoying every moment of it. I’m playing the game I’ve always dreamed of playing, and I’m beyond excited.”

MLB won’t suspend Chris Sale for throwing behind Manny Machado

Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale will not be suspended by Major League Baseball for throwing behind Baltimore Orioles star Manny Machado, a source told ESPN’s Buster Olney.

Sale threw a 98 mph fastball at the knees and behind Machado in the first inning of Tuesday night’s game at Fenway Park, leading plate umpire D.J. Reyburn to issue warnings to both benches.

The incident came a day after Boston’s Mookie Betts was hit by a pitch from Orioles starter Dylan Bundy—another incident in an ongoing feud between the teams.

Chris Sale throws behind Manny Machado in latest edition of Red Sox feud with Orioles

It did not end there, however, as Dylan Bundy drilled Mookie Betts in the hip Monday in the first game of a four-game series at Fenway Park. So naturally, with Chris Sale on the mound Tuesday, this pitch happened in the first inning.

The benches were warned after Sale’s inside pitch to Machado, though Machado and Orioles manager Buck Schowalter appeared to have some choice words for the umpires and the Red Sox dugout after the incident.

The inside pitch did not set Sale back at all, however. Four pitches later, Sale struck Machado out on a 98 mph fastball to strike out the side. He went on to strike out the first five Orioles batters of the game before Jonathan Schoop flied out to center field.

Watch Matt Barnes Get Ejected For Throwing At Manny Machado Despite Foul Ball

The Boston Red Sox’s payback on Manny Machado took bizarre form Sunday. The Baltimore Orioles third baseman drew the ire of the Red Sox on Friday for his hard slide on Dustin Pedroia, which injured the veteran second baseman. Boston didn’t retaliate Saturday, but the issue finally came to a head late in Sunday’s series finale. With one out in the eighth inning, Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes appeared to throw at Machado’s head — although the ball ended up hitting Machado’s bat for a foul ball.

Barnes immediately was ejected by home plate umpire Andy Fletcher despite the ball hitting Machado’s bat. And if you’re wondering if a pitcher can be tossed while technically dealing a strike, the answer is “yes,” as it was pretty clear Barnes was targeting Machado.

Could Manny Machado be one of the all-time great third basemen? | FOX Sports

Manny moving to shortstop seems like a fanciful idea to me.
