Cubs bench coach Mark Loretta reportedly interviews for Padres’ manager job

While David Ross is set to become the Cubs’ next manager, a member of the team’s 2019 coaching staff has reportedly interviewed for a managerial vacancy elsewhere.

Cubs bench coach Mark Loretta recently interviewed for the Padres’ managerial opening, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. It’s the second known managerial opening Loretta has interviewed for this offseason, as he also interviewed for the Cubs’ before they chose Ross.

Like Ross and the Cubs, Loretta has several ties to the Padres. The 48-year-old played three seasons with San Diego (2003-05) during his 15-year big-league career. He also spent nine seasons as a special assistant in the Padres front office, working with general manager Jed Hoyer — who held the same position with the Padres from 2010-11.

And the searches press on….

Cubs to interview Joe Girardi, David Ross and Will Venable for managerial opening next week

Joe Girardi expressed interest in the Cubs managerial job on Wednesday. Next week, he’ll get a chance to make his pitch.

The Cubs announced Friday that they’ll interview Girardi, David Ross and Will Venable next week for their managerial opening. The club also said that they interviewed Mark Loretta on Thursday.

Girardi expressed interest in the Cubs’ opening on Wednesday, speaking highly of the organization in an interview with NBC Sports Chicago.

“It’s always been perceived as a good job,” Girardi said. “A big reason is because of the fans and the opportunity to work at Wrigley Field all the time, and the excitement Cubs fans have brought for many, many years.

Let the scramble for the open managerial positions begin!

Cubs Coach Loretta Suspended for Talking to NY Replay

MLB suspended Chicago Cubs Bench Coach Mark Loretta one game for using the umpires’ Replay Review headset to speak with the Replay Official in New York in an attempt to get an explanation for an outcome that didn’t go his team’s way.

On Saturday, September 21, Replay confirmed 3B Umpire and Crew Chief Mike Everitt’s third inning ruling that Cubs runner Kyle Schwarber was out during a stolen base attempt when Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter appeared to tag Schwarber with the heel of his glove.

Following the confirmed ruling, Loretta purportedly intercepted the on-field Replay Review technician and spoke via headset to the Replay Operations Center, earning Loretta a one-game suspension for unauthorized use of equipment (“inappropriate conduct”), which he served Tuesday night in Pittsburgh.

Sincere question: Has something like this happened before?
