Jeter 267/316/321, Ichiro 276/325/323. (Also, Jeter 8-1 SB-CS, Ichiro 10-2!)
Stephen Drew was back on the bench Tuesday night. And no, Joe Girardi said, there was nothing physically wrong with the player who is supposed to be the Yankees’ starting second baseman.
That was the plan anyway when Brian Cashman acquired Drew in the extremely rare trade with the Red Sox minutes before the nonwaiver deadline on July 31… [but] The Yankees are running out of time, and Girardi can’t afford to be patient. Their best lineup now has Martin Prado at second base, where he was Tuesday night, and Ichiro Suzuki in rightfield… this is turning out to be a lost year for Drew, and it’s not just a lousy 15 games (.157/.204/.235) since the trade.
Drew’s been on a downward spiral from the jump, hitting .170/.241/.302 in 54 games divided between the two teams. The Yankees can cover for that futility to some degree by going with Prado at second now that Carlos Beltran is capable of playing the outfield again.
But it’s not like the Yankees are swimming in DHs, either. That configuration leaves Drew, Ichiro, Francisco Cervelli and Brendan Ryan with whom to mix and match. Which is why Girardi is stuck with few choices beyond using Ichiro in right, Beltran at DH and Prado at second.

Prado is a flexibility machine. I’m surprised Girardi didn’t mention Prado at second base and first base. In his career he’s played 245 games at 2B and 56 games at 1B. Talk about Headley playing in the OF is just silly.
“These moves give us a lot of flexibility,” Girardi said in a pregame news conference. In the approximately eight-minute question-and-answer session with reporters, Girardi used the word “flexibility” six times. He scored points by staying on point.

Welcome to succeeding Derek Jeter, Stephen Drew. Hope you survive the experience!
With the Red Sox taking part in a full-scale roster makeover on Thursday, the Yankees took the opportunity to get in on the action and upgrade their infield, completing their first trade with Boston since 1997.
Stephen Drew will suit up in Fenway’s visitors’ clubhouse when the American League East rivals meet on Friday evening, having been acquired by the Yankees in exchange for infielder Kelly Johnson.
The Yankees weren’t done bolstering their infield there, however. Veteran utility man Martin Prado is also headed to the Bronx, with the Yankees sending the D-backs catching prospect Peter O’Brien—ranked No. 9 among Yanks prospects by MLB.com before the deal—and a player to be named or cash…
Drew has played only shortstop during his nine-year Major League career, but that is expected to change with Derek Jeter installed at the position for his final big league season; Drew could take over at second base for Brian Roberts…
The Yankees announced a smaller addition in the hours leading up to Thursday’s 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline, claiming right-hander Esmil Rogers off waivers from the Blue Jays…
The Yankees unconditionally released infielder Scott Sizemore, who was with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
