2015 Futures Game Notebook: Nick Williams Figures It Out -

It’s OK not to swing at pitches out of the strike zone. It’s not OK letting perfectly good pitches over the plate go by to wait for the perfect pitch.

Athletics first baseman Matt Olson heard it all the time growing up. He’s big, he’s strong and he hits the ball a long way, so why not expand the zone to drive in more runs.

But drawing walks always has been part of what Olson does. It’s part of his approach and one he’s not changing. For his career, Olson has a .127 isolated on-base percentage (on-base percentage minus batting average).

“My dad and high school coach would tell me swing the bat. It’s funny to look back on it,” he said. “I would hear, ‘Swing at that pitch 2 inches off the plate and see what you can do with it,’” Olson said.

It’s safe to say that Olson, 21, doesn’t hear that anymore. The A’s emphasize avoiding outs. A walk helps keep the inning going.

With the exception of his .373 on-base percentage Olson’s stats have not been all that impressive this year at Double-A Midland. But the A’s say they see the same player and the same swings. Olson says he doesn’t think he needs to change anything, even if the results haven’t been there yet–he’s hitting .223/.373/.376 with eight home runs.

“I’m not down there changing anything,” he said. “The way my approach was last year and how I’ve continued this year I believe is right for me.”
