Mets’ Jacob deGrom Sets Record With 26th Straight Start Allowing Three Runs or Fewer

There’s something of a weird everyman appeal to this story, though I’m reasonably sure deGrom wishes it wasn’t so.

If the Mets were searching for a silver lining this season, look no further than the play of ace righthander Jacob deGrom.

On Tuesday, deGrom registered his 26th straight start allowing three runs or fewer, surrendering just two runs across seven innings against the Marlins. The previous record was set by Leslie “King” Cole in 1908. It took 108 years for his mark to be topped. Once again though, the Mets handed their ace a tough-luck loss. deGrom’s record dropped to 8-9 on the year.

His quality outing actually raised his league-leading ERA from 1.68 to 1.71. Such is life for a top Cy Young Award candidate. It would still be the lowest single-season ERA for a pitcher since Zack Greinke finished the 2015 season with a 1.66 figure for the Dodgers.

Jacob deGrom posts new MLB mark for consecutive games allowing 3 runs or fewer

Can you imagine what the reactions would be if he were playing on a remotely competent team?

The New York Mets ace went into Monday’s start against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 1.68 ERA, .978 WHIP, 224 strikeouts and 41 walks allowed in 182 innings pitched.

He left having pitched another gem, allowing two hits, and one earned run with six strikeouts in six innings pitched. And a place in the MLB history books.

The outing means deGrom is the first MLB pitcher to complete 25 straight starts allowing three runs or fewer, a record that dates back to 2013.

Adam Ottavino Rebuilt Himself in a Vacant Manhattan Storefront (Sawchuck)

Ottavino’s great start may be overshadowed by Josh Hader’s, but 31 K’s, 4 BB’s and 1 one run allowed in 17 innings is good stuff.

Between West 124th and 125th Streets on St. Nicholas Ave. in Harlem rests a street-level commercial space situated between a Dollar Tree and a Chuck E. Cheese’s, and it is where Adam Ottavino might have saved his career last winter.

...He thought he had now had some solutions. He had bought tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment with which to try and make himself a better pitcher. But he needed a place to experiment.

His father-in-law, a real-estate developer, had an idea. He had a vacated commercial property, a former Nine West shoe store, that rented at $22,000 per month. He would allow Ottavino to use the space for four months for free that winter as a high-tech, makeshift throwing facility.
