Jennings takes liner off head in Marlins loss to Pirates

In one seventh-inning instant, the game became secondary.

The Marlins and Pirates played through a horrific episode that saw lefty reliever Dan Jennings take a Jordy Mercer liner off the left side of his head. The ball went straight up and into the glove of shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria.

A shocked and disoriented Jennings went down and got up immediately. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia arrived and helped him down to a knee. PNC Park went silent. Jennings’ teammates gathered and Mercer in a catcher’s crouch looked on from the infield grass between first base and the mound.

It sounds like he’s going to be OK, but man, that was scary.

MLB: Marlins’ ace Jose Fernandez to DL with sprained right elbow

According to Jeff Passan on Twitter, Tommy John surgery is basically an inevitability for Fernandez.  Welp, here’s your bummer of the month:

LOS ANGELES—Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was placed on the disabled list with a right elbow sprain Monday. The club was awaiting results of an MRI on the 21-year-old right-hander’s throwing arm.

Losing Fernandez is a blow to an upstart Miami team that is built around its rotation.

“You see how much he means, so much to our team and our rotation and really all of baseball,” Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. “He’s been a dynamic player. He’s been a huge lift and a huge spark for our team. We just hope everything goes well and he just has to take a little bit of a break.”

Fernandez was initially scheduled to pitch in Wednesday’s series finale at the Dodgers. For now, the Marlins have yet to announce who will take his place.

Miami did recall lefty reliever Dan Jennings to fill Fernandez’s roster spot.

Fernandez expressed to the team that he felt some discomfort following his start on Friday.

SI: Watch as Jose Fernandez executes a brilliant pump-fake to deke Braves into running into an out at home plate

If you don’t enjoy watching Jose Fernandez play baseball, you don’t enjoy baseball.  Click through and enjoy.

That Jose Fernandez can pitch with the best in the game is beyond doubt. That he can hit pretty well for a pitcher is no secret either — particularly to the Braves. But who knew he had such presence of mind in the field?

On Wednesday night against the Braves in Miami, with the game still scoreless, Fernandez got into a bit of a jam in the third inning by walking Tyler Pastornicky and allowing a Jason Heyward double. When Ramiro Pena hit a tapper halfway down the third base line and got a great jump out of the box, it appeared as though the Braves would put across the game’s first run, but instead of throwing to first base, Fernandez pump-faked, fooling Pastornicky into breaking for home. While Pastornicky eluded the pitcher’s initial attempt at a tag, Fernandez quickly flipped the ball to catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia in time to nab him. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez considered trying to challenge the call but ultimately did not.
