Grant: Five things I think I think about Ian Kinsler going scorched earth on Texas Rangers

If there is a point to [Ian] Kinsler’s rant worth noting, I think it is that [Jon] Daniels and his staff got a little too close to players early on in his tenure as a GM. Mistake of youth. Daniels was in his late 20s and an age-contemporary of many of these guys and made them feel more like partners than employees. Baseball players are still employees and as you get more experience in a management role, you realize that you have to keep your distance more from players. Hopefully Daniels and staff have recognized that. It happened with Michael Young – since patched up. And it has happened again with Kinsler…

Speaking of Michael Young, I think it’s worth pointing out that for all the alleged sleaziness, the Rangers treated Kinsler with kid gloves on position switches. On Young’s two position switches, the Rangers once simply informed him of his new role. On the other, they may have worked around his desires to get Adrian Beltre, even if that meant then trying to deal Young. With Kinsler: The Rangers asked him if he’d consider moving to first for the team. Kinsler accepted. Then rescinded. And the Rangers allowed him to go back to second…

I think it’s entirely appropriate for Kinsler to be upset about the way he found out about the deal. You hate to hear it through media, via text or from somebody else without actually hearing from your boss first. This is an unfortunate and kind of sickening byproduct of the journalism of the moment in which rumors are fine to print without confirmation. We’re all guilty of it, myself included. But we live in a society where immediacy seems to be all that matters.
