Joe Maddon and nine other MLB managers on the hot seat

On Sunday, 20 MLB teams will play their final game of the 2019 season.

By Monday, half of those teams could be looking for a new manager.

That’s how much turnover is possible in the managerial ranks.

Some teams have already made the decision to go in another direction. Others are weighing their options. And others still are rumored to be basing their decisions on who becomes available.

A consideration of managers, just before the merry-go-round could begin moving.

Mets vs. Noah Syndergaard: The disagreement that could cost them a playoff spot

NEW YORK – Noah Syndergaard and Mickey Callaway aren’t on the same page regarding the value of pairing Syndergaard with his preferred catcher, Tomas Nido.

And it was made clear again Friday.

Syndergaard would rather throw to Nido than the Mets’ starting catcher, Wilson Ramos. There’s a certain comfort level with Nido. Syndergaard also benefits from Nido’s ability to better frame the low ball.

The Mets’ dilemma is that to appease Syndergaard and start Nido, it would leave Ramos, the NL’s hottest second-half hitter entering Friday, on the bench.

So, is this Peak Metsness, or can this be topped?

Mets Say Robinson Cano Plans to Preserve Leg Health in Most Robinson Cano Way Ever

When Robinson Cano was diagnosed with a torn hamstring in early August, most skeptics and pundits presumed that he would miss the rest of the 2019 season.

In a surprising turn of events, the New York Mets activated the vet second baseman on Tuesday, less than a month after he went on the shelf. Cano wasn’t in the lineup for Tuesday night’s showdown against the Washington Nationals, but skipper Mickey Callaway claimed he would be available off the bench to pinch hit.

What isn’t the least bit shocking, however, is the manner in which Callaway and Co. are going to manage Cano’s tender hammy. Sound the alarms, folks, because Robbie will “control his running effort,” for the last month of the campaign.

This feels like some sort of punchline, but I’m not sure what the joke was….

Brodie Van Wagenen throws chair in heated meeting with Mets coaches

A tumultuous Mets season took another strange twist, with general manager Brodie Van Wagenen punctuating a heated meeting with the team’s coaching staff by throwing a chair, according to club sources.

The incident occurred following Friday’s 7-2 loss to the Phillies in which closer Edwin Diaz imploded in the ninth inning, allowing four runs in his latest meltdown.

An irate Van Wagenen assembled manager Mickey Callaway and the coaching staff in the coaches room immediately after the game, according to a source, and lashed out at the individuals present, bemoaning the fact Jacob deGrom’s strong performance had been wasted. Accompanying Van Wagenen at the meeting was assistant GM Allard Baird.

After ripping the coaches, according to a source, the usually mild-mannered Van Wagenen picked up a chair and threw it and told Callaway to go conduct his “f–king press conference.” Callaway provided no hint that anything was amiss as he met with reporters following the loss.

Jacob deGrom, Mets fall to Marlins as Mickey Callaway’s seat gets hotter

MIAMI — Already, the speculative whispers outside the organization — from fans, from national and local media, from those with other teams — have grown to a steady murmur: Is Mickey Callaway in danger of getting fired?

If this keeps up, those conversations will be happening inside the organization, too.

The Mets lost to the Marlins, 8-6, on Friday night. They are 20-23 and only treading water during what is supposed to be an easy chunk of their schedule. Jacob deGrom was bad, giving up seven runs (six earned) in five innings to by far the worst-hitting team in baseball. Pete Alonso homered twice and J.D. Davis once, but multiple late rallies weren’t enough.

In the seventh, Robinson Cano jogged, barely, toward first base on a rally-ending double play. Cano, who declined to speak to reporters, said through a team spokesman that he didn’t know there was only one out in the inning because the Marlins Park video board indicated that there were two outs. Callaway said Cano proactively approached him to apologize.

Should I send out a job application, or would that be rash?

Mickey Callaway’s unique message to Mets seems to have worked

Heading into last night’s contest against the Marlins, the Mets desperately needed a spark. They had lost five games on their six-game road trip, and Mets COO Jeff Wilpon saw a glimpse of the 2018 freefall and called a meeting with Mickey Callaway and Brodie Van Wagenen to figure out what the team could do better.

Callaway, then, gave a message to his team that he reiterated to reporters at Citi Field. And the inspiration behind his message comes from a little book called “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F—k.”

“There comes a point where you just got to forget it,” Callaway said. “Whatever has happened, if you are not injured, you are the same player you were two weeks ago when you were raking.

“The only thing different is your mindset because you’ve been struggling. There is a good book out there, I can’t tell you the title of that book, I’m sure you guys know what it is and it’s very true.”

Mind you, when playing the Marlins, the lyrics to “Winchester Cathedral” ought to be enough to motivate victory…..

Mickey Callaway on Mets’ pitching issues: ‘It’s not concerning’

The Mets’ 5.57 team ERA is the third-worst in the majors, better than only the Orioles and Red Sox. But manager Mickey Callaway isn’t ready to sound the alarm.

“It’s not concerning,” Callaway said at Citi Field before Monday night’s game against the Phillies, noting that the sample size is far too small for the team to be worried.

Is Callaway right to not be alarmed? Maybe…

Famous last words….
