Lineup snafu highlights Mickey Callaway’s inexperience

Is this rock bottom? It can always get worse, I guess.

Angell: Night Moves

The Mets’ new manager, Mickey Callaway, has so far proved imaginative and unafraid during the first sixteen games of his tenure, encouraging steals and the unexpected extra base in mid-rally. What is needed now to exorcise the bogey-team Nats is for him to emulate Fry’s example. Since baseball’s dimensions are different, he need only pee at the termination of the right- and left-field foul lines, where they meet the wall, and then—in consideration of the heavy in-game traffic around the plate—in the nearest men’s room behind home.

Citi Field can be still populated at midnight after or during most games, but Thursday, May 3rd, brings us a day game against the Braves, Mickey. Plenty of time for you to suddenly remember a forgotten watch or wallet, and rush back, late, to get this done. Do it, Mickey.

Pitcher batting 8th? Mets manager reveals his in-game strategies | New York Post

Starting pitchers are pretty much finished at 100 pitches.

“It’s a case-by-case basis: What has he done his last couple of outings?” Callaway said. “We have to take that into account. Another thing we really have to take into account this season is the amount of innings guys have thrown in the past. To expect them to go out and throw 110 pitches, 110, 110, all of a sudden their workload is going to go way up. One hundred is alarming, and then we will start, ‘We’ve got to get somebody going.’ But I think guys can handle, 108, 106. You won’t really see anybody throw over 115 pitches, that is just silly.”

Even if the pitcher is throwing a no-hitter?

“We are not going to throw a 130-pitch no-hitter,” Callaway said. “They are just out. They can hate me.”

Mickey Callaway already has a plan to revitalize Mets’ rotation | New York Post

Read the whole thing.

“Everyone I’ve been around pretty much walks outside, stretches, plays catch, they do their bullpen. Our pitchers in Cleveland had about an hour-and-a-half routine before they even went out and played catch. They were with massage therapists, then they were with trainers, getting all these hands-on things done, then they went to the weight room to see the strength coach for extra stretching, then they went on the bike, then they went outside and stretched.

“It’s pre-hab. If we can implement those types of things, we have a better chance to stay healthy. It does work. When you present it to these guys, they are going to want to do it.”

Also, be prepared for a six-man rotation
