Minor gets 200th K after Rangers let popup drop

Mike Minor’s 200th strikeout of the season for the Texas Rangers came with some controversy Thursday.

With one out in the ninth inning and Minor a strikeout away from reaching the mark for the first time in his career, the left-hander got the Boston Red Sox’s Chris Owings to pop up a 1-2 pitch into foul territory. Minor, catcher Jose Trevino and first baseman Ronald Guzman converged on the ball, but Guzman let it drop in front of him, allowing Owings’ at-bat to continue.

Minor struck him out on the next pitch for his ninth strikeout of the game and 200th of his season.

“We were yelling, telling [Guzman] to drop it because there’s going to be two strikes,” Minor said. “He dropped it, and then he looked at me like, ‘What? Why?’ And then everybody started booing or whatever. I had to thank him for that, because [the fans] didn’t understand.”

The things we do for milestones…..

One advanced metric says he’s baseball’s top pitcher. Mike Minor isn’t buying it

NEW YORK — Mike Minor is in a class of his own.

At least according to “Baseball-Reference WAR,” which ranks Minor as the top pitcher in all of major-league baseball this season (7.0).

Just don’t tell Minor that he’s No. 1.

Because even after pitching 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball against the mighty New York Yankees on Monday, the Texas Rangers veteran southpaw wasn’t buying it.

To be fair to Minor, pitcher WAR can get contested in ways not as common with that for position players…..

LEADING OFF: Minor, Stroman start on deadline radars

A look at what’s happening around the majors today:

DEADLINE SHOWCASE

Contenders will be tuned into starts by Texas left-hander Mike Minor and Toronto righty Marcus Stroman as the July 31 trade deadline nears. The free-falling Rangers have just about played their way out of contention for an AL wild card, and the 31-year-old could fetch a useful package of future pieces. Minor (8-5, 2.86) is set to face Seattle in a matinee. Stroman (6-10, 3.06) and the Blue Jays are set to play the Indians, who will pitch All-Star Game MVP Shane Bieber (9-3, 3.69). Stroman pitched seven scoreless innings against the Tigers in his previous start.

Warning: deadline radars are about as dangerous as the Fisher-Price Bathtub Toaster.
