Is positionless baseball MLB’s next big thing?

Let’s remember: We are not talking about a team that has chosen to value offense over defense. We are talking about the best defensive team in the majors.

In other words, the Brewers have achieved this elite defensive standing as much through scheming, shifting and analysis about where players should stand as they have through individual play. Consider defensive games played, a count of every player who has appeared at every position (except pitcher). For example, if you have three players appear at third base in a game, you have three defensive games played at that position for the game.

Tallying all those up, only the Dodgers have more defensive games played than Milwaukee. The Brewers rank in the top 10 in the majors in appearances at every position except catcher, where they rank 14th. They rank second at second base, shortstop and right field, and fourth at first base. Counsell moves players around like they he’s playing chess, and with all that, his defense has been better than anyone’s.

9 Pirates 7, Brewers 6 (10): Two late leads slip away

The Brewers ended the first half with six consecutive losses, getting swept in the five-game series by the Pirates. The bullpen’s inability to hold leads ruined a great day by Brett Phillips, who tripled in three runs in the eighth and singled in another in the 10th after being summoned from the minors.

A brutal end of the pre-break part of the season for Milwaukee. Meanwhile, the Pirates have joined the back end of the wild card race and start a tour of beautiful Ohio on Friday.

Brewers Surprise Bob Uecker by dressing as him for flight to Pittsburgh

Bob Uecker was one of the first passengers aboard the Brewers’ charter flight Sunday for a rare road trip, and he had an inkling something was up when he noticed one of the flight attendants wearing a shirt with his name on it.

Uecker knew something was up when first-base coach Ed Sedar climbed aboard wearing a loud sport coat over his T-shirt bearing an infamous image of Uecker in a Speedo, the one that had been splashed across the pages of Sports Illustrated a decade ago.

Brewers first baseman Eric Thames goes on DL with torn thumb ligament

Thames was injured Tuesday night in the eighth inning of the Brewers’ game against Kansas City, when he dived to his right to snag a grounder from Mike Moustakas, flipping to reliever Dan Jennings covering the bag for the out. Thames jammed his glove hand hard into the ground making the play and exited the game after that inning.

Before the season, they seemed to have a logjam of capable position players.  That logjam is now defunct, with the primary playing time beneficiaries likely to be Domingo Santana and Jesus Aguilar.  Aguilar has slugged north of .500 in 350 PAs since being claimed on waivers from the Indians before last season.
