Minor league team to celebrate cats on Saturday | FOX Sports

This is just very, very wrong. Certainly Dan Szymborski will be able to clue us in on the festivities.

The BlueClaws will be wearing special jerseys that will be auctioned off to benefit BlueClaws Charities (shown in the image above). For your best chance to secure a jersey, join us at the game, but an extremely limited quantity will be available online next week.

Fans are able to bring their cats to the game (will need to sign a waiver and be in a case or on a leash and cats are admitted with a $2 Paw Pass). The BlueClaws, however, encourage all fans to use proper judgment when deciding if their cat is able to handle the noise, crowd, and atmosphere that they will encounter at a typical BlueClaws game.

There will be songs, movie clips, promotions, memes, and more fun as well!

There will be a special guest appearance by Miss Kitty. The speciality drink “The Black Cat Cocktail” will be available in the Coors Light WRAT Trap. There will be a special rendition of Take MEOW Out to the Ballgame, and a special CATurday T-Shirt will be available in the Claws Cove.

2 women make history for Sonoma pro baseball team - SFGate

The bright idea to recruit women was first floated by film director Francis Ford Coppola, who said in a news release that he always wondered why there weren’t co-ed teams in professional baseball given that the game doesn’t rely as much on size and strength as other sports.

“My family would play co-ed baseball games and inevitably the star player would always be an aunt,” said Coppola, whose Virginia Dare Winery, in Geyserville, has been a primary sponsor of the team over the past three years. “So when my Sonoma winery became involved with the Stompers, I had the opportunity to turn this thought into a reality and recruit these amazing women capable of playing alongside men.”

The women eventually picked are no slouches. Team officials scouted Piagno and Whitmore at the tryouts for Team USA, which is scheduled to play in the Women’s Baseball World Cup in South Korea this fall. Piagno no-hit Puerto Rico at the 2015 Pan Am Games and was a softball player at the University of Tampa. Whitmore, who recently graduated from high school, will attend Cal State Fullerton on a softball scholarship this coming year.

The Sonoma Stompers are set to make more history by signing two women to their roster | MLB.com

Only one question really matters to me, are they good enough to compete? If they aren’t, it’s just another stunt.

“This isn’t a one-day event. That’s been done a dozen times. Let’s give women a chance to be part of a team, let’s give women a chance to play against men. What will they learn? What have they not been coached because they haven’t had the same coaching as boys? I remember being really disappointed with my sister’s coaches because they coached the girls a lot different than how I was coached.”
...
“Both of these girls are on the roster,” Fightmaster said. “They’re gonna play however much they earn. They are not gonna be in the starting lineup every night so we can sell more tickets. It’s a big game on July 1 and they’ll both be in the lineup and after that we’ll see what their performance dictates.”

SI Yankees’ Sabermetrics Day looks to draw fans - Mlb - Scout

Watch your backs, fellas. Watch your backs.

Last season, the SI Yanks held a Game of Thrones Night, which set the attendance record for any game at Richmond County Ballpark.

The objective behind Sabermetrics Day is to accomplish the same result – and to entice (new) fans so that they begin – and continue – coming to games consistently.

Holley believes that if the event goes well, there could be another Sabermetrics Day next season.

Promo Watch: Putting the “Stat” in Staten Island Yankees | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

Is this supposed to bring people in or keep them away? Tip: Dan is a big hugger.

In addition to 10 FanGraphs-affiliated folks, writers from ESPN, FiveThirtyEight, Sports Illustrated and Baseball Prospectus will be in attendance. Seven of these attendees—Dave Cameron, Carson Cistulli, Dan Szymborski, Ben Lindbergh, Jonah Keri, Emma Span and Meg Rowley—will participate in a sold-out “VIP Q and A pregame panel.” Tickets to the Statgeek Picnic, which will be attended by all the guests, are still available at a cost of $30.
