Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-6-2016

Pittsburgh Press, September 6, 1916:

Suitcase Charley Pechous, the new Cub third sacker, is a recruit from Peoria…He received his cognomen from the fact that when he joined the Cubs he was so excited at the prospect of taking a trip with the big leaguers that he invested 80 cents in a paper suitcase in which to carry his toothbrush and hankey. He left the case on the station platform in the rain and when he picked it up the handle came away and the sides of the case fell in.

The Cubs’ nickname game was on point in 1916. Suitcase Charley was a better nickname than a ballplayer, though. After hitting .180/.228/.217 in parts of three seasons, he was out of the big leagues for good before his 21st birthday.

Feldman (NYDN): Binghamton Mets Double-A team to stay in town, change name

I’m going with Heroin Hubs.

“We’re thrilled to be keeping Double-A, New York Mets baseball here in the community but with a new name that everyone in Binghamton can call its own. The new name will bring in a new era that proudly represents a crown jewel of the community.”

The Binghamton Mets were bought after the 2015 season by Florida-based Main Street Baseball, but the sale was rejected by the Eastern League after the buyers announced that they wanted to move the team to Wilmington, Delaware, according to the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin.

Instead, the team was sold to Georgia-based Evans Street Baseball, who will keep the Mets in Binghamton.

On Opening Day, April 7, Binghamton will launch a “Name the Team” contest.

Submissions will be taken through April 25, at which point the top six names will be revealed.

Fans will then be able to vote on their pick for two weeks.

The new name will be unveiled in October.
