Ex-A’s right-hander Jarrod Parker retires after career derailed by injuries

At just 29, Jarrod Parker is officially retiring from the game in which he fought so hard to stay after two hideous elbow injuries. He told The Chronicle this week that all that remains is the paperwork.

“I’m not entertaining any offers, let’s put it that way,” Parker said. “I’m just working through the logistical stuff.”

Not surprising, but still kind of a shame. He was a hell of a pitcher before his elbow fell apart.

Lopes ‘taking it easy’ after calling it quits

NEW YORK—Fifty years after the Dodgers drafted him, Davey Lopes said on the Newsmakers podcast that he is retiring after 45 consecutive years in the Major Leagues.

“I’m not doing much. I’m retired, taking it easy,” said Lopes, who last worked for the Nationals as a first-base coach in 2017. “It was not a difficult decision to make, but one I was kind of hesitant to make. But it all works out. I got the opportunity to play, manage or coach for a long, long time. I’m extremely thankful. I was one of the lucky ones in the big leagues for 45 straight years. That’s a long time. I have no complaints.”

Marcell Ozuna reveals the once place he didn’t want to be traded to.

Marcell Ozuna, the new St. Louis Cardinals outfielder, met the local fans for the first time Sunday at the team’s annual Winter Warm-Up event and relayed a story that will surely endear him to Cardinals fans for years to come.

And it might earn him some boos the next time he’s in Oakland.

As you might recall, Ozuna’s trade from the Miami Marlins to St. Louis was held in a bit of limbo during the Winter Meetings before it finally became official on both sides. Ozuna — who hit .312 with 37 homers and 124 RBIs last season — was just happy he landed in St. Louis and not the first place to which he thought he was getting traded to.

Long time Padres coach Rob Picciolo dies at 64.

The longest-tenured coach in Padres history, Rob Picciolo played nine years in a big league infield and worked his way up San Diego’s coaching ladder after starting in player development. That made him a natural resource as former pitcher Mark Grant moved into the television booth for Padres broadcasts in the late ‘90s.

Picciolo’s easy-going nature also made him an easy mark any time Grant tried to contact him via their old flip-phones’ walkie-talkie mode.

Dustin Fowler sues White Sox over injury at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Dustin Fowler’s lawsuit, filed Friday, claims that the Sox and the [state] agency were negligent in not securing the unpadded electrical box he collided with along the right field line during the June 29 game.

Fowler, then playing for the New York Yankees, crashed into the right field wall while chasing down a fly ball in foul territory. Fowler hit the low side of the wall at full speed, causing him to flip over. When he tried to stand up, he fell to the ground, prompting a gasp from the crowd.

The top-100 prospect, playing his first major league game, was sidelined for the rest of the season after emergency surgery at Rush University Medical Center.

Dodgers decline option on Andre Ethier, making him a free agent

The Dodgers bid farewell to outfielder Andre Ethier on Sunday, declining his 2018 option and casting the longest-tenured member of their roster into free agency.
...
In his 12 major league seasons — all with the Dodgers — he made two All-Star teams and batted .285 with 162 home runs. His 303 doubles rank second to Willie Davis in the franchise’s Los Angeles history.

Drafted by Oakland, but acquired for the low, low price of one Milton Bradley!!!
