Official: [Oscar] Taveras was drunk during fatal crash

St. Louis Cardinals rookie outfielder Oscar Taveras was drunk at the time of his fatal car crash last month in his Caribbean homeland, an official in the Dominican Republic said Wednesday.

Tessie Sanchez, a spokeswoman for the Dominican attorney general’s office, told The Associated Press toxicology reports showed Taveras had a blood-alcohol level five times the country’s legal limit when he lost control of his car Oct. 26 on a highway in the tourist region of Puerto Plata.

She says the 22-year-old Taveras was ‘‘legally intoxicated when he crashed.’‘...

Taveras’ 18-year-old girlfriend, Edilia Arvelo, was in his 2014 Chevy Camaro when it ran off the road. She also died.

I don’t know how to embed a photo but here is the link to the Twitter page with the photo.  I thought this was very touching.

When drama of World Series intersects with drama of Oscar Taveras and real life, we are reminded it truly is just a game | FOX Sports

I love prospects, the excitement and mystery they generate, the potential for them to develop into superstars — or not.
Oscar Taveras was such a talent, the Cardinals’ best position prospect since Albert Pujols. He had a gorgeous finish to his left-handed swing. He hit a big home run in the NLCS.
And on Sunday night, in the middle of Game 5 of the World Series, we learned that he was gone.

Juan Perez delivers key hit after learning his good friend Oscar Taveras died - Yahoo Sports

None of this was ordinary, of course. The idea of playing in tribute to someone is cliché. Using sports, these stupid games we play, to honor their memory is equally trite. It’s also a canvas for something greater. What Juan Perez did Sunday wasn’t just play for his friend Oscar, for the whole baseball world that grieved at his loss. Perez played for himself, and on an awful night for the sport, nothing was more redeeming than that.

Gleeman: Oscar Taveras is hitting and Mike Matheny is happy

Trading veterans because your dumbo manager refuses to stop playing them? John Mabry?? I’ve seen this movie before!!

Oscar Taveras is playing and playing well lately, easing Cardinals fans’ concerns about manager Mike Matheny frequently benching the 22-year-old rookie for lesser talents, and now Matheny is full of praise for the work Taveras has put in to get better.

Matheny told Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post Dispatch that Taveras has made “huge adjustments” since a slow start to his MLB career, adding:

He’s really worked hard in the cage with [hitting coaches John Mabry and David Bell] on his approach and shortening his swing a bit. Even his outs were pretty loud. He’s definitely taking steps in the right direction.

It’s too small of a sample size to get truly excited yet, but Taveras is in a 9-for-22 stretch right now and has hit a combined .280 with just 13 strikeouts in his last 100 plate appearances.
