Sean Doolittle Calls His 2019 Star Wars Bobblehead One Of The Highlights Of His Career

The Nationals are harnessing The Force this season:

The Nationals’ 2019 promotional schedule released on Monday includes a camo tank top, Racing Presidents tote bag and the return of Friday night fireworks. It also features a Sean Doolittle “Obi-Sean Kenobi” Star Wars bobblehead, and no one is happier about that than the Nationals’ closer. “I’m not kidding that this is like one of the highlights of my career,” Doolittle said in a phone interview. “I finally have a Star Wars bobblehead, and I’m super excited about it.”
.  .  .
Doolittle’s Star Wars figurine is one of seven bobbleheads on this year’s promotional calendar. The Nationals will give away 10,000 Captain America-inspired Ryan Zimmerman bobbleheads for Marvel Super Hero Day on May 25. The other bobblehead giveaways, which will go to the first 25,000 fans through the gates, are Juan Soto (April 12), Trea Turner (May 15), Max Scherzer (June 21), Adam Eaton (July 2) and Patrick Corbin (Aug. 17).

Juan Soto already has a record breaking age-19 season and a bobblehead? Must be a Hall of Fame cinch, eh?

The Nationals Don’t Need Bryce Harper

The best thing to happen to the Washington Nationals this offseason might be Bryce Harper turning down the $300 million contract offered by the club at the end of the season. Rather than allocating vast resources to one free agent superstar, the Nationals made smaller moves to shore up their weak spots, signing starting pitcher Patrick Corbin on Tuesday to bolster their rotation and adding two catchers earlier in the offseason.

It wasn’t clear if the Nationals would be able to compete without Harper. But according to some forecasts, they are already better without him. They have improved themselves in a National League East where every team — save for the Miami Marlins — seems intent on trying to dramatically improve this offseason.

After the Nationals finished 82-80 last season, FanGraphs projects them as the sixth-best team in the majors at the moment — the best team in the division — with a 91-71 forecasted record. While it’s unclear whether the Nationals still want to compete for Harper, they don’t need him to improve over last season.

I must admit that this analysis has me torn- on the one hand, I’m inclined to regard Harper as highly overrated, but, on the other, I can’t say that I buy these claims. What say the rest of you?

An early look at Patrick Corbin’s free agency

Scout’s take
“Depending on how things shake out this winter with options and opt-outs, it is reasonable to expect that Patrick Corbin is one of the top starting pitchers in this year’s free-agent class. His age, left-handedness and dominant secondary offerings all factor into what will be a lucrative pay day this offseason. He is athletic, competitive and throws a lot of strikes with an understanding of how to pitch with his repertoire. All of those things project to age well over a multiyear commitment. He is set to top 200 innings pitched this season and that type of workload with his stuff and strikes can help any club searching for pitching. The potential pitfalls come in throwing over 40 percent sliders and already having pitched four years with a new UCL. Those factors may lead to a deal that is potentially front-loaded, but more than likely Patrick will find him a desired target for a number of teams with designs on contending in 2019.”
