Maeda strikes out 12, drives in 2 as Dodgers top Padres 2-0

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kenta Maeda dominated on the mound and helped himself at the plate.

The right-hander struck out 12 batters and drove in both runs in leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.

“It’s hard to imagine him being any better,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “It was really, really fun to watch. He was great all night long.”

We were discussing a week or so ago pitchers driving in their run support- here’s another one for that list.

Stephen Strasburg gets thrown out from right field while attempting to break up no-hitter

No-hit bids usually end when a batter makes contact like Stephen Strasburg did in the sixth inning of Sunday’s game between the Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Dodgers.

With Dodgers starter Hyun-jin Ryu mowing down the Nationals lineup, Strasburg stepped into the box hoping to get his team’s first hit of the day. That seemed to have happened when Strasburg poked a low line drive down the right-field line that bounced in the outfield.

And then Dodgers right-fielder Cody Bellinger did this.

Question, for those viewing the play:

Does this reflect positively on Bellinger, or negatively on Strasburg?

Zack Greinke continues to swing hot bat

Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke has long been regarded as a good-hitting pitcher, but he still entered Thursday afternoon’s game against the Pirates with a career .597 OPS. For as good as he is compared to other pitchers, he swings the bat about as well as the worst bench players in the league.

So far this year, though, it’s a different story. Along with a dominating pitching performance in a 5-0 win over the Pirates, Greinke went 1-for-3 with a triple. On the mound, Greinke tossed seven shutout innings, limiting the Pirates to two hits and a walk while striking out seven. He’s now 4-1 with a 3.72 ERA and a 39/7 K/BB ratio in 36 1/3 innings on the year.

A periodic reminder that Harold Baines might be glad there’s such a thing as a designated hitter, but that that’s no reason for the rest of us to agree….

Luis Castillo forgets to run, thrown out at first

Always keep your eyes on the ball.

Reds pitcher Luis Castillo learned that lesson on Monday night at Dodger Stadium. Leading off the third inning against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, Castillo punched what looked like an opposite-field single into right field. But Castillo didn’t run out of the box. Instead, he stared at his bat, which he appeared to chip.

Is this what defenders of the designated hitter see every time a pitcher has an at-bat?
