Svrluga: Baseball’s Relentless Grind - Doug Fister

Starting pitchers such as the Nationals’ Doug Fister must mix patience with intensity, down time with diligence

The original beat writer for the Nationals when they surfaced in D.C., Barry Svrluga, submits his 4th installment in a series examining “how the everydayness of baseball affects an entire organization.” A long piece that makes for good weekend reading, or next week at the office :-)

I hope WaPo’s paywall doesn’t prevent you from reading this series, those money-grubbing bastids!

Grantland: The Pitching Championship Belt, Part 1

• The goal is to identify the pitcher the majority of baseball fans would have picked as the best pitcher on the planet at the end of the season. You know, Family Feud style. Imagine a poll in the back of Baseball Digest or Sporting News where only people who really cared about baseball responded.

• That means we have to measure it in statistics that most fans use. Yes, I think pitcher wins are basically a useless statistic, just like you do. But we’re in the minority. So wins, ERA, strikeouts, and innings pitched are the four numbers I’m relying upon most heavily.

Happy Jack, take a bow.

Kilgore - Did Jordan Zimmermann throw the best start in Nationals history?

Two Ns if you please!

Zimmermann has turned any worry about his performance into a quaint relic. He has thrown 17 scoreless innings in June. Sunday, he fired a 12-strikeout, two-hit shutout at the Padres. How is this for improvement: By one objective measure, it stands as the best start in Nationals history.

The linked article has a tabulation of the 16 best game score outings by Nationals pitchers.

PitcherGifs.com

Pitcher Gifs is your home for Gifs of every pitcher in the major leagues.  We wanted to provide baseball fans a way to turn pitchers from a stat-line to a visual comprehension, allowing viewers to witness each type of pitch thrown by every MLB pitcher in one convenient location.

We are still in Beta, but we currently have the expected starting rotation for all MLB teams completed.

I had no idea this was a thing, but it’s now one of my very favorite things. Their Gif of the day feature is extremely cool.

Matt Moore hurt in Rays’ loss to Royals.

Manager Joe Maddon acknowledged after the 4-2 loss that they wouldn’t know for sure until getting the MRI results. But he said head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield, after talking with the Royals doctor who did an initial exam at the stadium, told him he considered the injury less severe than last year’s, when Moore was sidelined for more than a month due to soreness.

Moore, 24, said he felt only the soreness — and no pop or sharp pain — while throwing his changeup during the fifth inning, with no prior issues during the game or even since he started throwing in spring training.

And thus also to Rays.
