Miley’s former coach helps him get back on track

After two years of frustration while he was a member of the Orioles – he posted a 5.75 ERA and 1.7 WHIP in 43 starts—veteran left-hander Wade Miley got a call from an old friend back home in the winter of 2017 offering to help him rejuvenate his career.

“I made it real simple,” Chris Westcott said. “You’ve got two options: You either work hard, or you’re going to milk cows. It’s up to you.”

Miley certainly isn’t against hard work, but throwing a baseball is all he had ever done, and he wasn’t up for a career change at 31 years old. Miley put his faith in Westcott, his pitching coach in Louisiana since he was 15 years old, to help get him into shape and back on track.

White Sox don’t see Harper-type free agent on starting-pitcher market

LAS VEGAS — The White Sox seem to have a very specific set of circumstances when it comes to going after big-name free agents this winter.

Rick Hahn has explained over and over again that a player has to fit in with the team’s long-term plans, and he’s discussed taking advantage of opportunities to add premium talent to his ongoing rebuilding effort.

And the obvious guys that fall into that category are Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, the two biggest names on the free-agent market, two 26-year-old superstars who are expected to receive some of the biggest contracts in baseball history and change whichever franchise they sign up with.

Well, yeah- we call those folk, when they are involved in pitching, “relievers”.....

The starting pitching market will be crazy even without Clayton Kershaw

Free agency has arrived in Major League Baseball, which means we’re off and running with what could go down as the craziest offseason in a long time. That’s despite a potentially chaotic element being settled on Friday.

Clayton Kershaw will not reach the open market. The elite left-hander has elected to remain with the Los Angeles Dodgers after declining his two-year option worth nearly $70 million and re-signing for three years at $93 million.

Kershaw staying with the Dodgers was always the expected outcome. But now that it’s official it gives us a clear perspective of how the starting pitching market will look, at least initially.

Some commentary to keep in mind, as the hot-stove season begins.
