MLB needs to decide who Players Weekend is for

It only took three years for Major League Baseball’s Players Weekend to go from novelty to annoyance and that’s a bit amazing.

It’s also extremely predictable given what fans have seen from MLB over the last century or so. The only way it’s shown it can operate is with strict adherence to whatever rules — written or otherwise — it puts in place no matter how silly the League ends up looking for it. And if you look around baseball on Saturday, you’ll see plenty of silliness.

If it’s not another manager or player bemoaning the monochromatic jerseys, it’s the league quickly chastising teams for daring to wear their normal caps or straight up refusing to allow the Dodgers and Yankees to wear their own iconic threads during a rare inter-league matchup.

No one is complaining about the players using their nicknames instead of surnames or that the custom cleats are distracting. The bigger issue seems to be that MLB isn’t quite sure who it wants Players Weekend to benefit.

A consideration of a gimmick, and the reasons why said gimmick has been backfiring.

Baseball fans trashed the MLB Players’ Weekend black-and-white jerseys

MLB Players’ Weekend returned for its third year on Friday, and fans are roasting the league’s decision to introduce solid black and white Players’ Weekend jerseys for every team in 2019.

In the past, teams wore special edition jerseys for Players’ Weekend, but still retained their usual team colors. This weekend, every baseball game on television will be almost indistinguishable, and you might forget which teams are playing if you aren’t paying attention to the scoreboard.

The Chicago Cubs, thankfully, wore their usual blue caps on Friday to add a splash of color to their game against the Washington Nationals. For teams wearing solid white, however, it’s nearly impossible to read the logos and nicknames on each jersey. If you’re checking out highlights from across the league, every game looks the same.

In addition to all the other insults, I’ll note that the players in white vaguely resemble cricket players, which I strongly doubt was the intent of whoever had this idea…..

LEADING OFF: Players get creative, Yanks at Dodger Stadium

NAME THAT NICKNAME

Jerseys will take on a different look during Players’ Weekend, when big leaguers are encouraged to be creative with what goes on the back of their uniforms.

Cleveland outfielder Yasiel Puig will have Wild Horse, for the way he charges around the bases. Rays pitcher Charlie Morton will use Ground Chuck, for how he induces grounders. Reds first baseman Joey Votto will go with Who — for the “Abbott and Costello” comedy routine of “Who’s on First?”

Rockies pitcher Chad Bettis is skipping letters and going with an emoji — of lettuce, to rhyme with his last name.

Yes, folks, it’s time for this again…..

MLB Players’ Weekend is back with new nicknames, sleek uniforms and more social media

At the end of August, Major League Baseball players will have an opportunity to show off their personalities. Players’ Weekend is back, and it promises sleek uniforms, more social media presence than ever and entertaining player nicknames. Do you want to know which player will go by “Scoots McGoots” during the festivities? Of course you do.

But before we get into that, here are the particulars. Players’ Weekend will take place Aug. 23-25. On top of nicknames on jerseys, players will be allowed to use custom designs for various pieces of equipment, including spikes, batting gloves, bats, and catcher’s gear.

During the weekend, there will be a much more relaxed mobile device policy. Players will be able to use smart phones and tablets on the field or in the dugout up until the national anthem. Before and after games, players have the option to wear a shirt highlighting a cause or charity of their choice.

A number of MLB stars have been named Players’ Weekend Ambassadors for the festivities. They’ll be tasked with representing and leading their clubs. There will be 30 ambassadors in total, one representing each team. Ronald Acuña Jr., Pete Alonso, Cody Bellinger, Mookie Betts, Alex Bregman and Hunter Pence are among the players who will act as ambassadors during the weekend.

The more and more details I hear, the more and more the “fun” of this event feels forced.
