Posnanski: No. 36: Cal Ripken

The countdown resumes.

It took the mad genius of Earl Weaver to see a future for this guy at shortstop. Ripken had always been a third baseman. In 1981 and early 1982, when Ripken came to the big leagues, he was a third baseman. But Weaver was aching to move the kid to shortstop. No one in the organization agreed with him — not one person. But 1982 was Weaver’s last year as manager, and he didn’t give a $*$%* what anyone thought even before he became a lame duck. On July 2, he put Ripken at shortstop to stay.  For once in his $*%%&$# life, Earl Weaver wanted to have a $&#$* shortstop who could $&%&$ hit.

Long May They Reign

Poz weighs in as only Poz can.

This will be a story about luck and magic and the Kansas City Royals, but why don’t we start with Art Stewart? That’s him over there by the wall, yes, the little guy, the scout with tears in his eyes. He’s 88 now, and he has been in this game long enough that he timed a young Mickey Mantle running to first base. Positive? Nobody has ever been more positive. One time, after the Kansas City Royals drafted a young outfielder named Chris Lubanski, the Royals brought the kid to Kauffman Stadium to take batting practice.

“Men,” Art told us all. “You will remember this day for the rest of your lives.”

Lubanski didn’t pan out; few Royals prospects seemed to pan out in those years, but we all remembered the day because of Art Stewart’s unquenchable and untouchable and unreasonable faith in baseball and promise and the Kansas City Royals turning it around someday.
