The PosCast with Joe Posnanski and Michael Schur - 3/21/15

Pace of play: Both Joe Posnanski and Michael Schur dislike the new pace of play rules. They fear that they will detract from the feel of the sport, and from the hitter/pitcher “chess game.” They believe it is pointless to address the pace of play without addressing the main problem, which in their opinion is pitching changes. Since pitching changes are opportunities to run commercials, they are pessimistic that anything meaningful can be accomplished on this front.

Playoff picks: In the AL, Poz has the Red Sox beating the Angels in the LCS; Schur has Mariners over Red Sox. In the NL, Schur has Dodgers over Nationals; Poz has Cubs over somebody.

Draft: This week’s draft is “great things about baseball.”

  1. Poz - The ball
  2. Schur - No clock
  3. Poz - Baseball caps
  4. Schur - Baseball cards (This leads to both deciding that Matt Szczur, of whom neither of them had previously heard, is their favorite player)
  5. Poz - Statistics
  6. Schur - Non-uniform playing field dimensions (Schur pulls off an impressive combination of knowledge and ignorance when he mentions “John McGraw Stadium”)
  7. Poz - Baseball on the radio, especially Vin Scully
  8. Schur - “Homer” announcers
  9. Poz - Triples
  10. Schur - ? Draft ended early.

Rankings baseball’s top 10 defenses for 2015. | SportsonEarth.com : Anthony Castrovince Article

I liked the Semien comment. A lot of people don’t think Semien has the chops to handle shortstop on a regular basis. When you look at it from this perspective, though, it doesn’t seem to be a stretch to have him stay there.

Man, so many changes to this roster in such a short time. But attention to detail on defense is a constant. Brett Lawrie, if healthy (that’s always the “if” with Lawrie), is a major defensive asset at the hot corner. Ben Zobrist can handle seemingly every position on the field with aplomb, which is why he’s so valuable. Marcus Semien will be an upgrade over Jed Lowrie at short. Between Josh Reddick, Coco Crisp and whoever plays left field—Sam Fuld or Craig Gentry - the outfield is well-situated from a defensive standpoint.

Beyond the Box Score’s rankings of the best players for 2015: 45-11 - Beyond the Box Score

Kris Bryant at 45? That’s expecting a lot for a rookie. Of course, only one vote put him there.

These three NL teams will make a leap in 2015. | SportsonEarth.com : Tracy Ringolsby Article

The Dodgers should be able to keep pace with last year. The Brewers, though, will probably be heading in the other direction.

5 bold predictions for the rest of the MLB offseason. | SportsonEarth.com : Anthony Castrovince Article

Alas, nobody’s seriously expecting the 20-second pitch clock—the best of the pace-of-play procedures tested in the Arizona Fall League—to be instituted anytime soon, but one league source said the “one foot in the batter’s box” rule that was also tested does have some legs (pun intended).

10 problems with Jose Canseco’s predictions for 2015

Problem: The rights to Family Matters were originally owned by ABC, then CBS bought them. No way is that valuable series being sold to NBC. Sorry, not happening.

Problem: Peace in the Middle East would be amazing, make it so Cansecodamus—but where is this ocean located? Israel isn’t on an ocean, it’s on the
Mediterranean Sea. Moreover, who’s trading a part of the Mediterranean Sea? 200 miles in any direction hits Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus or Syria.

As a sports tout, Meyer charges up to $250,000 to provide gamblers with his predictions on the outcome of major college and professional sports including football, basketball and baseball, the indictment states.
