Lowriders, piñatas, margaritas and the best new Minor League Baseball alter egos

Last year, Minor League Baseball introduced a new idea that turned a league that already loved its alter egos into a league where it was impossible to own all the cool hats.

The Copa de la Diversión series — which translates to “The Fun Cup” — was a way for baseball to pay homage to the game’s Latino influence and fans, as dozens of teams developed fun and colorful alter egos. We saw teams centered around Mariachis, Cucuys and Flying Chanclas, who would play a handful of games each year.

The whole thing was so cool that it deserved a sequel. MILB on Monday announced a total of 72 teams that were getting Copa de la Diversión alter egos for 2019, some old favorites, like those flying flip-flops and other new ones that seem ripe for retweets in the Twitter age.

Ah, the joys of minor league promotions….

Rochester Red Wings will honor city’s deaf culture with ASL uniforms

It’s not uncommon in Rochester, New York, to begin speaking to a stranger and have them reply in American Sign Language (ASL).

The city has been referred to as having the nation’s highest per capita deaf population, backed up in 2012 with data by the Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf (RIT/NTID). The school estimated 3.7 percent of the city is deaf or hard-of-hearing.

That’s why the Rochester Red Wings, long-time Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, are teaming up with RIT/NTID for Deaf Culture Day on Sunday, April 28 at Frontier Field.

An interesting consideration of the various forms that promotions can take in the minor leagues.

Star Wars and Game of Thrones among highlights from Orioles 2019 promotional calendar

Pouring over your favorite baseball team’s promotional schedule is a time-honored tradition, and Orioles fans finally have the chance to mark their calendars with this year’s best items to add to their collections.

The Orioles announced their 2019 promotional schedule this week, and fans are already excited about some of the best giveaways and theme nights that Camden Yards has to offer this season.

And yes, before you ask, they’ll be bringing back fan favorites like the floppy hats and hawaiian shirts.

I’d rather not imagine how a Game Of Thrones-themed promotion would go….

Sean Doolittle Calls His 2019 Star Wars Bobblehead One Of The Highlights Of His Career

The Nationals are harnessing The Force this season:

The Nationals’ 2019 promotional schedule released on Monday includes a camo tank top, Racing Presidents tote bag and the return of Friday night fireworks. It also features a Sean Doolittle “Obi-Sean Kenobi” Star Wars bobblehead, and no one is happier about that than the Nationals’ closer. “I’m not kidding that this is like one of the highlights of my career,” Doolittle said in a phone interview. “I finally have a Star Wars bobblehead, and I’m super excited about it.”
.  .  .
Doolittle’s Star Wars figurine is one of seven bobbleheads on this year’s promotional calendar. The Nationals will give away 10,000 Captain America-inspired Ryan Zimmerman bobbleheads for Marvel Super Hero Day on May 25. The other bobblehead giveaways, which will go to the first 25,000 fans through the gates, are Juan Soto (April 12), Trea Turner (May 15), Max Scherzer (June 21), Adam Eaton (July 2) and Patrick Corbin (Aug. 17).

Juan Soto already has a record breaking age-19 season and a bobblehead? Must be a Hall of Fame cinch, eh?
