For Randy Johnson, Dominance didn’t come easy

“On the bright Sunday afternoon of March 18, 1984, Randy Johnson took the mound for the University of Southern California at Arizona State University’s Packard Stadium.

He was among the most interesting collection of sports figures ever assembled on a college baseball field.

The game featured two players who would break the major leagues’ single-season home run record (one still holds it). One would become an NFL linebacker and head coach, another would eventually be a major-league manager. Then there was a center fielder deemed the best player of all of them, a seeming Hall of Famer in waiting.

Oh, and the umpires included a Phoenix resident who would become the first (and still only) woman to rise to the ranks of Class AAA baseball, one notch below the big leagues.”

Plus ASU’s 4th outfielder, a kid named Mike Devereaux who was the only team-member not to vote the starting left fielder off the team, because he didn’t want to get his starting job that way.

12 News (Phoenix): Piestewa family: Adding name to highway in bad taste

I have no problem with the temporary co-naming of the highway but IMHO not contacting the family beforehand was a pretty big misstep.

The family of Lori Piestewa said they were never contacted about a plan to place former Diamondback pitcher Randy Johnson’s name alongside Piestewa’s on the Piestewa Freeway.

Piestewa was killed in a firefight in Iraq in 2003. Private Jessica Lynch was kidnapped during that same firefight and was later rescued from captivity.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Gov. Doug Ducey’s office announced plans to place signs honoring Johnson, who played as number 51, along Highway 51, which is named the Piesetwa freeway. The signs were timed to coincide with Johnson’s Hall of Fame induction.

But Piestewa’s family said it was in poor taste to elevate a sports star to the same level as a fallen soldier, no matter how great his accomplishments on the mound. ...

The announcement by the Diamondbacks led to countless articles claiming the freeway would be renamed in honor of Johnson. Ducey’s office said that wasn’t true, the renaming is only temporary.

“We’re not renaming it,” Ducey’s spokesman Daniel Scarpinato said. “Our state obviously honors and continues to honor Lori Piestewa and her memory and her service.”

The signs are expected to be in place for three weeks, Scarpinato said.

Here’s an update.

Pretty Good: Oh my God, the Mets gave Koo Dae-Sung a baseball bat

This is a great ten minute video covering one of the most unlikely offensive performances in baseball history.  I’ll take a thousand flailing strikeouts if that’s the price to pay for Mr. Koo’s at-bat and baserunning against Randy Johnson.

Randy Johnson throws out D-backs’ first pitch, could still probably strike you out

Soon-to-be-enshrined Hall of Famer Randy Johnson joined the Arizona Diamondbacks for opening day, taking the mound to throw out the first pitch.

Johnson stood taller than everyone around him on the field, them calmly walked out to the mound and zoomed his first pitch over the plate like he wasn’t even trying, like he was doing these things yesterday. Johnson, 51, hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2009 but obviously isn’t out of practice, even though he devotes his time to photography these days.
