When Judging World Series, Context Is Paramount

In 1975 Cincinnati defeated Boston in a seven-game epic, still cited as one of the greatest World Series ever played.  That World Series averaged a 28.7 rating and would have ranked No. 2 among primetime programs that season.  The rating itself was over three times as high as this year’s series, but the rank of the series among primetime hits wasn’t much different.

In 1985 Kansas City topped St. Louis in seven games, giving the Royals their first and, until this weekend, only world championship.  That series averaged a 25.3 rating and would have ranked No. 3 in the primetime top 10.

In 1995 Atlanta beat Cleveland in six games, averaged a 19.5 rating and would also have ranked No. 3 among primetime hits.

In 2005 the Chicago White Sox swept the Houston Astros to earn their first title in 88 years.  The four-game sweep clearly impacted viewership, as the series averaged an 11.1 rating and would have ranked ninth in prime time, a relatively low ranking for the World Series by historic standards.

...This year’s series went five games and would rank third for the season-to-date.  Everything and nothing has changed.

In 1967, 78 million viewers saw the fugitive Richard Kimble confront the one-armed man.  In 2015, 17 million viewers saw the one-armed man playing second base.

Though their unforgettable season came to a close on Friday, the Toronto Blue Jays remain ratings winners. Game 6 of the American League Championship Series between the Blue Jays and the Kansas City Royals delivered Sportsnet’s largest audience in network history with an average audience of 5.12 million viewers tuning in on October 23 to cheer on Canada’s team in their last game of the 2015 postseason. Overall, more than 12 million people watched some part of Friday’s broadcast – more than 1 in 3 Canadians.

SBNation: 9% of Canada watched Troy Tulowitzki’s 12-pitch battle with Andrew Miller

Some staggering stats have been sent by Sportsnet since the Blue Jays’ huge trade-deadline moves, but nothing as mind-boggling as this: 3.14 million people tuned in on Sportsnet’s broadcast of the game against the Yankees at 10:19 pm on Friday, when Troy Tulowitzki was engaged in a 12-pitch battle against Andrew Miller.

How confident are you in your MLB general manager? - MLB Daily Dish

In the end, the Cubs and the Astros finished in a virtual tie for the top spot, with their fanbases each rating them at just a shade under 4.9 out of 5.0. This isn’t terribly surprising. Both clubs are run by exceptionally smart people, with excellent reputations, and are competitive a year ahead of schedule. It’s easy to buy into that. To no one’s surprise, the Marlins finished dead last, as every single respondent rated their confidence in Mike Berger at one. The other day, Mike Hill, President of Baseball Operations for the Marlins, said that he “would hope our fans are educated enough to see what we’re doing here.” Rest assured, Mike. They are.
