Rebuild or Retool? Evaluating the Giants Offseason Choices

Some commentary on the current state of the Giants, and considerations as for what the Giants can do in response.

There’s nothing in the rule book that says a rebuild has to last a long time

We might not know the definition of Larry Baer’s “next gen GM” phrase, but it implies there will be a change in the team’s philosophy. That doesn’t mean there will be a drastic change in the way the Giants market themselves or explain what they’re doing, and that’s important to remember as the Giants are about to undergo their first total rebuild of the 21st century. The efforts of this “next gen GM” will surely be spun as anything but a rebuild.

However, it’s worth noting that rebuilds aren’t inherently scary — the Giants weren’t going to get better doing things the same way and the ill-at-ease feeling most people have is tied to players currently on the team —it’s just that they create uncertainty, and that is certainly a scary prospect.

But these are the San Francisco Giants. They’re the fourth-most valuable team in Major League Baseball. They have the resources and commitment to winning quickly. Ownership and the fan base might not have the stomach for a lengthy reorganization, but that doesn’t mean the new front office overlord has to avoid a rebuild.

Point of order! The total number of these sorts of teardowns is still both too small and too recent in order to make any real judgments on how long they can take!

Rebuilding Now Could Save The Giants Years Of Losing

Question: If everyone ends up tanking, will anyone really benefit from it?

The time to act came a year ago, and the opportunity was purposefully missed.

The time to recognize that is now, and the next steps are ones the San Francisco Giants have hidden from, ignored or completely ghosted for well more than a year. Instead, the franchise that believes its fan base will never accept a tear down-and-rebuild nestled itself deeper and deeper into a hole with every ill-advised signing and trade since early last season when their postseason chances were washed out.

Now, reality is in plain sight as the Bay Area fog lifts to expose the serious trouble the Giants are in at all levels. Fixing those troubles means no longer sticking Band-Aids on a terminal disease; it means recognizing the best way to get the franchise back on a winning track.

Duquette elaborates on economics of rebuild, murky on future of homegrown players at ‘State of the Orioles’

...So we’re redirecting those resources into our scouting operation, into our recruiting, into our player development. We’re going to be active on the international recruiting market. We’re going to be active in more technology and facilities, in our training program…
