Mariners reportedly made a strong push for Martin « Hot Stove

Not a vote of confidence for Mike Zunino.

According to a source, the Mariners, surprisingly, were among the finalists who pushed hard for Russell Martin, who eventually agreed to a five-year, $82 million contract with the Blue Jays on Monday.

Blue Jays won’t let others dictate off-season - Sportsnet.ca

The part about the Jays signing Martin because they “have enough positions in flux” so he can move to another position is funny.

As I reported last week the Blue Jays will take a shot at signing free-agent catcher Russell Martin, who is said by some industry insiders to already be leaning in the Chicago Cubs direction. Martin wants a contract worth between $75-$80 million over five years, similar to or a little more than the deal Brian McCann received from the New York Yankees last winter. An intriguing component might be Martin’s oft-stated desire to move out from behind the plate at some point, and while it challenges the bounds of reality to see him at shortstop, the Blue Jays have enough positions in flux that it might prove to be a bit of a carrot for Martin.

Pirates must weigh risk, reward in attempt to sign Martin | TribLIVE

Some team will get very stupid this off-season with Russell Martin.

“We’re in an interesting era for age curves because of the skew of performance-enhancing drugs,” Huntington said. “We are trying to re-evaluate aging curves because they were taken way out of whack because of the influence of performance-enhancing drugs.”

Brisbee: The 10 most underrated players in baseball, part 2

Part 1 here.

What is an underrated baseball player?... It’s the Supreme Court definition of obscenity: I know it when I see it. There’s a feeling of je ne sais notice that goes along with the player, good, great or otherwise. The only thing I’m pretty sure of is that players who have won the All-Star voting in recent years aren’t eligible. That’s a clear popularity contest, and the popularity eliminates players from consideration. Sorry, Josh Donaldson.

10. Old Man Jimmy Rollins
9. Kyle Lohse
8. Cody Allen
7. Lorenzo Cain
6. Austin Jackson
5. Jordan Zimmermann
4. Russell Martin
3. Corey Kluber
2. Kyle Seager
1. Ben Zobrist
