Brewers’ Braun aiming to build off strong finish last season

PHOENIX (AP) — Those days of playing every day, they’re done for Ryan Braun. Most important for the longtime Milwaukee Brewers star these days is making the most of the time he’s in the lineup.

Now 35, Braun is inching closer to the downside of his career. And while he is still capable of being a game-changing presence, staying healthy and on the field on a regular basis is not nearly as easy as it was when he was 28 and just hitting his prime.

Managing Braun’s playing time to keep him fresh has been an annual challenge for Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell. He, Braun and the team’s training staff try to map out a plan each year to build in scheduled rest days along the way — day games after night games, especially ahead of scheduled team off-days — to keep Braun as available as possible.

Not quite at toast status, but the toaster is coming ever closer….

Brewers’ Braun changing swing, focused on being a force

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Now 35, Ryan Braun is years past his dominant, MVP self. Yet the aging slugger is trying to set himself up to be a part of the Milwaukee Brewers’ promising future.

Specifically, Braun is doing something he’s never done: changing his swing. And to do that, he’s been using analytics.

“Based on where my swing was at the beginning of the offseason, I’ve made some productive adjustments at least according to all of those (analytics),” Braun said Sunday at the Brewers’ annual winter fan festival.

Yes, but a force for what?

Brewers riding hot Braun against Tigers

MILWAUKEE — It’s been a full decade since the Milwaukee Brewers snapped a 26-year playoff drought, thanks in large part to a monster final week by Ryan Braun.

Braun, who came up big again three years later when the Brewers won their first NL Central crown, has been through a lot since. But now, with the team headed back to the playoffs for the first time since 2011, it’s no coincidence that Braun is again playing at an elite level.

He has five home runs over his last four games, including a two-homer night on Friday in the series opener against the Detroit Tigers, after hitting just one over his previous 28 contests.

My understanding is that “riding hot Braun” is either a sandwich they eat in Louisville, or something that will get you in deep trouble with the police….
